Grand Theft Auto V has been criticized for depicting torture, deploying heavily sexual scenes, using racially offensive terms and a misogynistic portrayal of women.

It is also the most financially successful media title of all time.

Since its launch in 2013, GTA V has sold 90 million units, putting its total haul for publisher Take-Two Interactive Inc. TTWO, -4.06% in the neighborhood of $6 billionfar above the success of blockbuster movies like Star Wars or Gone With The Wind, which both collected more than $3 billion, adjusted for inflation. Even taking into account DVD and streaming sales would not put the biggest movie blockbusters in GTA Vs neighborhood, said Cowen analyst Doug Creutz, estimating those sales might add up to $1 billion to the films totals.

I think its a wild outlier, Creutz told MarketWatch in a phone interview. I think maybe with the exception something Nintendo has madeMario Brothersbut aside from that theres never been a console game thats sold so many units.

While the Mario franchise has sold more units in total, no single Mario game has come close to collecting $6 billion on its own. GTA V stands alone largely because of the titles continued longevity: It continues to bring in hundreds of millions in revenue more than four years after its launch, finishing 2017 as the sixth best-selling videogame in the U.S., according to NPD Group data.

the game is also constantly in the top 10 sales since launch and is rarely below $40.
and there are lots of idiots like me who keep getting banned for modding and keep rebuying the game lmao

There's people like me who bought it on 360, then again on Xbone, and I'm probably getting it on PC once I finally upgrade my computer in a couple months.

What sucks is GTAO is really only fun with friends, and you need to spend real money or spend hours grinding heists to get all the fun shit like that Tesla Roadster with a rocket attached to it.

It's like the default game to buy for your new console or gaming PC since 2013. Moreso than any other game I can think of.

GTA V is great. GTA Online is heavily flawed but I absolutely understand the appeal. But like how does it just keep going. I dont see anyone talk about the game. I dont know anyone who still plays it. But it's been parked in the top 5ish Steam games forever and I'm sure its chugging along on consoles too.

I lost interest in GTA5 after R completely abandoned updating the single player to keep pushing GTAO. Greedy bastards.

It's a mobile game at this point.
In addition to having to log in every day, else risk losing stats, you have to constanty grind and buy actual car insurance in game.

Look at it this way. About 15-20 million people bought a new PS4/Xbox One last year. For a lot of these people it's their first entry to this generation. Who knows how many people upgraded or bought a new gaming PC. What's the most broadly appealing game to most console/PC gamers? Easily GTA. Even if they bought it last gen a lot of people rebuy it for the improved visuals too.

I'll still get RDR2 on day one since the first is my favorite video game of all time.

But if it's ruined by MTs too, I'll likely never buy another unless it's stated that it wont have them.
