For me, it was Grand Theft Auto 3 during the PS2 days. A friend had cheat codes and he told me where to find them. I was a lurker up until like... 2004 maybe?

GTA: San Andreas. The off-topic board for the PS2 was my first time posting on a forum of any kind. I was about 10 at the time (2005-ish). Made my first internet friends on there, talked to them on MSN Messenger for a while afterwards. Then I started trolling too hard, broke ToS and got banned. Those were the days.

Back then, I was lucky to find FAQs on a site like IGN(then gamesages). If only stupid me knew to search for 'FAQs' instead of just 'guide'. I would have found this site much sooner.

i figured out the water temple without a guide and i i gotta admit i like water levels so this didnt bother me at all.

you know what got me stuck though?
the password on the sunken ship in super mario rpg legend of the seven stars.

i got that game in grade 2 and didnt beat it until i was in grade 7

i would get to the ship fail at the password and get frustrated and quit and a month later restart the game from the beginning.

the room with the giant button in the middle. i didnt realize i could jump on a barrel to roll it over to the switch so i didnt realize that room had the clue "the r comes before the l"
that was the clue that made everything finally click

fun fact the little guide book that comes with super mario rpg in the snes box doesnt mention the princess as a party member
it tells you mario, mallow, geno and bowser are your party members
getting the princess is a surprise.

legend of the dragoons mini book had a similar issue
it shows dart, lavits, albert, shana, rose, haschel but it doesnt show miranda, meru or kongol
