Loved the Final Fantasy games. Especially to golden years of 7-10. Seen some videos and Persona seems a lot more talking about random crap rather than actually just getting on with the plot. If I like FF7 will I like Persona?

P5 is the best JRPG to date. A couple of minor annoyances, but not enough to drop its 10/10 rating.

Didn't really answer my question. I'm not really keen on games like the tales series where you get loads of filler from pointless conversations between the characters. Just want to get on with the main plot. Reason why I always skipped the monster of the week x files episodes.

I haven't played 5 but assuming it's like 4, the main plot kind of unfolds slowly while you spend a lot of time talking with and learning more about characters to form bonds with them. They're usually pretty entertaining.

The games basically have 2 halves. One half is you go into dungeons and fight monsters in a standard RPG fashion. You mostly fight using your "persona" which is basically your summon >_>

The 2nd half is a daytime part where you follow the game through a calender schedule and go to school, do side activities like batting cages, working out, and hanging out with people. When you hang out with certain people, it strengthens certain classes of persona summons to be more powerful. You have to manage your time between when to hang out with people, when to build your stats with activities, and when to go to a dungeon to beat a chunk of it. There is a day limit between dungeon levels, but it's really generous so you don't feel pressured.

It's more fun than I make it sound >_> If you want to dip your toe in and see, I recommend Persona 3 FES or Persona 4 on PS3's PSN. It's only $5 or $10 and I think it does a good job of showing what the game is about quickly. Later games add more features and are more streamlined. Be warned though, Persona 3 FES doesn't let you control other party member (only the main character) but the game is kinda built around that. Persona 4 and onwards lets your control all party members like a normal RPG

They don't really compare at all.

The later Persona games have some serious pacing issues due to the calendar system, which is the main bad thing. Still a fantastic game series.

If we're talking about in FF7's prime reception vs P5's, FF7 blows it out of the water.

But an objective comparison? Nostalgia is powerful with FF7. The dialogue is often cringe worthy or just flat out bad/poorly translated, it's painful to look at nowadays, and the story isn't particularly anything special.

That said, P5 suffers from the awful pacing the Persona series has due to the calendar system leaving you with large patches of time to do nothing but turn the game in to borderline V-Novel/Dating Sim style gaming with social links or grinding out in the random level-up/sidequest dungeon, but outside of that it's a solid JRPG.

Over-all, I'd still give the edge, minorly, to FF7. Persona's... a different sort of RPG, I suppose, but the presentation and game in general are top-notch. Pacing seriously holds it back from greatness though.

If exposition, weird pacing, and character building are hang ups, Persona probably isnt going to be your thing.

P5 is a great game and a natural progression for the series but it definitely has its share of flaws. Pacing is probably the most apparent one.

You skipped what are considered the best episodes of X-Files and are focused on the worst episodes. The overarching story of X-Files is very bad and incoherent.
