Kane was always my favorite growing up, and when they unmasked him, it was like they took the air out of him completely. I hated it. After a while (a lonnng while) unmasked kane actually grew on me a bit, then he became a fat jobber. Now he goes back and forth between his mask and no mask and its really stupid.

When he unmasked it ruined the image. He was originally viewed as a psychotic monster. Didnt give a fuck about anyone and was just there to cause pain...like Michael Meyers. Even when they humanized him a little and had him do funny or quirky things he still had that allure to him...

...then they unmasked and it was gone. The original image of him disappeared. His origins was changed. He just became your average tough guy wrestler. Same thing happened with undertaker but he was at least able to make his new gimmick worth something.

looking back it almost feels like they felt kane's character was becoming stale so they had to make a drastic change to capitalize on his popularity and keep him relevant before he starts fading. Problem being he was still very popular and they didn't need to shit on his character like that. Similar kind of feeling you get with scsa when he turned heel

A few months after he unmasked when he stopped being a monster. The first little while after he unmasked he was cool, wearing a towel over his head and going nuclear on anyone that smiled or laughed in his presence because he thought it was directed at him, felt more like the monster he originally was that he had in years. But then, as usual with Kane, they kind of lost interest in having him be a big deal.

Unmasked Kane is clearly inferior, but he had plenty of great moments both masked and unmasked. I could argue that if you split Kane's career into two halves (time spent masked and unmasked) that both of those careers by themselves are worthy of being in the WWE Hall of Fame. He's one of the all-time greats.

I also find it funny how he's only about 2 years younger than his storyline brother, but while Undertaker was demoted to "part-timer" status in 2010 and was a "rare special attraction" by 2012, Kane stayed pretty much a full-time member of the roster as recently as just last year. Plus, unlike a certain dead man walking (or should I say, dead man limping) Kane can still put on solid matches and not look like an old man in the ring.

Ultimately, I think the problem was with the way they botched his unmasking.

He doesn't look the way you would expect the monster beneath the mask to look. Turning him into a monster heel didn't work because he fought like Michael Myers and looked like Uncle Fester. It just made you wish you had the old Kane back.

They should've left him as a babyface so that the crowd could get used to the way he really looked and support him during his transition. Then, if they needed to, they could have turned him heel again once everyone was comfortable with his true appearance.

I wanted to post his rivalry with X-Pac, but he had a bit of a revival in 2000. He still could've rebounded.

But yeah, the X-Pac rivalry was the first big hit he took. David and Goliath rivalries don't work when the person in the David role is the bad guy.
