I ask because I am currently blowing through Pokmon Blue with only a Blastoise and a Clefable and it's fun to watch people grovel helplessly as they get pounded. But Gen I has so many mechanics to abuse (like Sleep) that I dunno if it'll work out when I try it in Gen 2 (second question: Should I do that?)

I typically enjoy the team building, but Gen 1 I've played through so many times that I tried it with just one Pokemon. When I was a kid I plowed through Red with just Charizard and HM slaves. Recently I did Blue with just Blastoise and HM slaves. I think a Venusaur playthrough is in order next time I do that.

It works best with Charizard or Blastoise, or so I've heard. I have the Blastoise, Clefable, and then Farfetch'd (Cut/Fly), Sandshrew (Dig/Strength), and Kadabra (Flash/Teleport) as HM/field move slaves. Blastoise has Surf, obvs.

In Gen 2, the starters aren't as good. I have a list here for Crystal that's... Meganium, Arcanine, Kingdra, Sneasel. That's 4 ideas. I want that Arcanine (hence no Typhlosion, sorry Bane) but which other do I go with? Or do I do three?

I did for a while, usually supplementing my starter with a legendary or two, but I found it more enjoyable to train up a full, varied team once I started doing that.

Curious about Gen 3: How did it work for you with Sceptile? This is under the presumption that your namesake is the beast you blew through that game with.

And tbh, I too find it more fun to have a full team, sometimes a team of 8 in rotation, but I've done that so many times (I haven't beaten Moon yet but that's the worst Gen) that I wanted a change of pace. Thought "Ooh, I can go through the first 3 Gens... with 6 total Pokmon."

I usually cycle through more than six, keeping them all evenly leveled. It's actually kinda necessary to do that in the more recent games to not be horribly overleveled...

this is the only way i can actually beat Pokemon games. whenever i try to build a whole team i can never narrow it down to just 6 and i end up just quitting.

This is a large reason why I haven't beated Moon. I couldn't pick the group of six I liked the most... in part because they were all decent, though none were phenomenal.

I ended up with 9 in X once I caught my shiny Conkeldurr (as a Gurdurr), but that was at endgame so I was fine. I had like 11 in rotation at one point in Moon and it was a problem. That wasn't the only reason I quit, though.

Pretty easy, as I recall. It certainly would have been Sceptile. I imagine it's going to be easy almost regardless of starter choice and game.

Yes
Done that up until Black/White, where Serperior sucked ass and it couldn't handle things on it's own so I had to build a team
X started as a Nuzlocke, then I failed and played normally, but kept the team
Solo starter on SM/USUM is pretty hard due to totems so I had to build a team too (good luck beating Lurantis with Datrix for example)

Still going strong in Gen 1. Ridiculously easy, honestly. The novelty is starting to wear thin.

tbh I might go with all four I mentioned for Crystal earlier and one more, so...
Meganium with Body Slam, Earthquake, Sunny Day, Solarbeam
Arcanine with Bite, Flamethrower, Dragonbreath, Xtremespeed
Sneasel with Rock Smash, Dig, Shadow Ball, Iron Tail
Xatu with Psychic, Fly, Night Shade, Thief
Kingdra with Surf, Twister, Return, Ice Beam
HM Slave Golduck: Strength, Whirlpool, Waterfall, Flash

Remember this is Gen II. Ice Punch is oddly useless on a Sneasel due to its 35 base Special Attack. There are also way too many HMs. So glad Golduck can learn 'em all except Cut and Fly, but 6/8 is awesome (I'll get something with Cut and ditch it when I get my Sneasel). This is a reminder why Gens V & VI were kind of nice with much less HM reliance.

This is more fun, right?

That's how I used to play Pokemon.

Now that they have a better exp system, I don't. I always felt like I was wasting EXP on pokemon I was going to stop using at some point. Mostly because the pokemon I always wanted to use couldn't be obtained until later in the game.

But in Red/Blue, Blastoise can wreck most everything in one or two hits if he's a high enough level.

I really enjoyed seeing those "super effective" messages on offense, so I would plan out as close to 100% type coverage as possible from the start.

Would stick with starters as well as the first Pokemon that filled the types I was looking for. Would make sure I wasn't wasting exp, plus EPs make single player easy

No, I am compelled to have a team of six as soon as possible. I almost always end up using the early game derps like Rattata and Pidgey just for the sake of having something on the team until better stuff shows up

Yeah I just hope they will keep that...but they need to fix something
For in-game the Gen V/VII exp formula is amazing, it stops you from being overleveled and it makes lower leveled Pokemon grow stronger faster, and it's making the game very balanced (USUM is the best in that regard)

But...it completely wrecks post-game and leveling to level 100 because nothing really comes close to level 100 and you just lose a lot of EXP by trying to get a Pokemon to max level
I would like if they make an active item or something that you can get post-game that change the exp formula (well, it would be weird for casual player to understand what the item does, but oh well)
