I joined the Army. Originally plan was the Air Force but picking a specific job is harder with them where as the Army just straight up let me pick. Most people I know who joined the Air Force were more set on just being a part of the air force so they didn't mind that part. Personally I was only interested in a select few jobs

I almost went in. At my physical I had an ingrown toenail. They told me to get that taken care of and come back. I got it taken care of...but I never went back.

also I don't know why so many people are voting Navy, that often means getting stuck on a ship out in the middle of the ocean cramped into a tiny living space and being super bored.

I don't know I had to go through Army Substance Abuse Program training to be a urinalysis program coordinator and I was the only Sailor in a group of 12 soldiers and ... it was pretty rough man. There was a Major asking about bath salts (he thought it was actually bath salts you buy at bath and body works), there was a girl who worked at an airfield who didn't know what an Osprey was.... like it was just awkward.

But desperation to find some meaningful progression in your life mixed with pressure from every family member that gets in contact with you to find a job and not be a bum is not a good combination.

Even once you sign the contract you can back out at any time before getting on the bus/plane to boot camp. And even then you can get an administrative discharge in the first year for failing to adapt :\

I don't know what those other things are and here's an opportunity to use my degree right at my doorsteps. Again, coupled with what I previously said, I would have willingly gone through it and been miserable all the way through.

I was going to ask why you think you would have been miserable since you didn't actually make it there and don't know what it's like at all. But then again you said you were going to be a nuclear machinist's mate so yeah you probably would have hated it rofl.

See, spitballing ideas like this isn't going to convince anyone, especially when it pertains to career choices. In any case, I took up cooking because I enjoy learning in the kitchen, I was good at it, and rose up the ranks super quickly (dishwashing to prep cooking to a line cook in about 6 months), but all my family members and friends told me to quit and get a real job the entire time I was in the industry. In the end, I quit due to my problems with the management, and now I work for the government, miserably making far more than I've ever had in my life.

I took a Nuclear Science course, as nice as my professor was, I was so bored. I was so. Stinkin'. BORED. The thing is, Physics as a whole, no matter how much I tried to delude myself, I don't care for it. Give me a paper to read, and I'll get halfway through the abstract and consider that enough Physics for one week. Yeah, optics is cool, but I will not care to read a paper on building optical tweezers to isolate and manipulate a molecule with light. Yes, Raman Spectroscopy is cool but I will not read the specifics of shooting light to a material learning the identity just on the energy of the photons released from the material. Just give me something to code or build and then I'll look up what I need to learn to get it done. But leisure reading in the field, I can't do it. Hence why Gradschool is not an option for me.
