Its a fucking scam. I got charged 240 + a 60 dollar ticket. The sign was obstructed by this big ass truck and it was my first time in the area.

A good chunk of it goes to paying the guy who manages to tow your car without severely damaging it (which I think is a worthwhile expenditure), plus more to pay the overhead and administrative costs for the impound.

I think I paid $400ish once to get my car back. I parked at what I thought to be a market's loading area around 1am thinking at that hour no one will be working. Unfortunately for me it was actually an apartment parking lot. I think it was only more expensive because I was trying to get it back during their afterhours.

It was a good lesson for me to not take any ol parking spot just because I think no one is using it. Annoyingly enough, the actual parking lot for the restaurant I was at was just across the street and had plenty of room. Me being lazy and thinking at 1am no one will miss that spot, didn't bother to move it back.

I parked my car behind my fraternity house in a shared lot (with hazards on) to load some stuff for one of the guys moving out. I walked inside for 5 minutes, walked out, and a tow truck was already lifting it onto its bed. I got a guy to park in front of their car and refuse to move until cops showed up. I had to pay 100$ for them to literally drop my car back onto the ground.

Five minutes seems rather quick for a tow truck to do that much. Still, I don't doubt your story as that seems rather fast for even someone to call and for a tow truck to respond. The driver was probably nearby and saw it as easy money. I read of stories of tow truck companies scratching up cars that may not even be parked illegally and making money off that.

How it happened to me, apparently the tow truck company was following the traffic cop and towing everyone who was getting a ticket. How do I know? Because some bystander saw me looking like crazy trying to find my car and told me what happened.

And really, it's not that hard to tow a car. 5 minutes is plenty of time.

When I was in a smaller city a friend visited us and parked in a lot he was not supposed to park.
I saw the tow truck hooking up his car walking home. So I ran into the house to tell him, the guy charged him 50 bucks just to unhinge his car from the toe. The fine would have been 200 or so otherwise.
