In no particular order

1. Resonance of fate. Rrally unique system, challenging yet fair. Absurd af, but feels and plays good. Lots of variety too.

2. Underrail. Holy amount of variety of builds, weapons, chems, armor, accessory, tools and energy shielding, skills and stat. Too bad it is solo isntead of squad based.

3. Age of decadence/dungeon rats. Still alot of builds with amazing weapon variety and armors, pretty hardcore difficulty yet damn fair. And satisfying. The dark souls of turn based RPG.

4. Divinity original sin and sequel. Fun spells and skill effect, the synergy between elements and environment are amazing. Open ended combat and gameplay create unique puzzlebox like combat you can solve in multiple ways. Too bad equipment system and level scaling sucks.

5. Alvora tactics/ voidspire tactics. It has almost the same level of interactivity like divinity original sin games, only with SNES graphics. Spells and skills affect environment, the class system is damn awesome and fun to mix and match.

Honorable mention:

Trails in the sky games for orbment system
Radiant historia for fun grid based combat
Chrono trigger (it is ATB but whatevs) for combo moves
Xenogears for deathblow
Grandia series for the battle bar
Most of atlus dungeon crawler like smt or etrian odyssey
The mario rpgs for interactive combat, creative use of QTE

FFX is one of the better one in character build/combat yeah. Should have put it too there

You should play Fallout Tactics. Its probably the single best implementation of squad based tactics ever put in a video game. It can be played turn based, but is better in real time
