There were wandering knights sometimes called Hedge Knights who slept out in the wilderness and were basically masterless Ronin like in Japan. If a village was having trouble with looters or bandit groups, the knight could walk in and the presence of an elite warrior in their group would make them think twice about going near that place again. Peasants were too poor to really spare coin or valuable items, but the knight could expect to be rewarded with small offerings; food, lodgings, provisions etc.Things that were pretty useful to someone living life on the road. Unfortunately 3/5 times a guy with good equipment and combat training but no job turned to some kind of banditry rather than helping out. If you had military grade weapons and armour and experience in handling them but werent working for a lord, it probably means you fucked up somewhere in those days.
