my cat got restless and jumped off then trotted out the room. this set my downstairs neighbor off. 4 very angry thumps against their ceiling. I had to get up at 3:30 just to follow my cat and make sure he doesn't keep making noise in the bedroom. now sitting up and wondering what I am supposed to do. should I just be nocturnal and stay up in my living room every night and then sleep during the day when the neighbor might be at work or something? I can't control this cat but he usually follows me into whatever room I am in. I have had him for 4 years in a previous apartment and this was never an issue. my mom suggested putting rugs to muffle sound. this is really annoying and stressing me out. now everytime my cat does anything, I worry.

thanks

I'l probably try the rug thing. this is crazy. I dont think he makes that much noise. but this person is really sensitive. the person above me I think has multiple cats and they make much more noise. I would love to switch places with the person below me. so they can hear what I hear, and so I can not worry about a downstairs neighbor. I don't mind the noise that much but I hate having to worry about someone else hearing me.

Just don't care. Let your cat wander and let your neighbor get annoyed.

Maybe suggest to your neighbor that they invest in a fan or white noise machine.

Rugs would help. A three pound cat sounds like an elephant stomping when you live downstairs from one. How they do it, I don't know, an esoteric cat art, apparently.

This. Every time she bangs on the ceiling give a good stomp with your foot.

Cats dont make that much noise, she is being unreasonable

Actually rugs are usually fairly expensive, and you can get comfortors for less.

In fact, to truly reduce noise, buy a bunch of cheap pillows and a few comfortors. place the pillows on your floor then cover them with the comfortors. You want themostly flat pillows not the super fluffy ones. You are not going to be sleeping on these pillows, so go for cheap (you can get pillows for 1$ each or so).

You also don't need to cover your whole floor, just the parts the cat can jump on, specifically around your bed. This can mean only getting like 10-15 pillows depending how your bed is situated. Also only means 2-3 comfortors (you can do it with sheets/blankets etc that you already have extra as well.

Not only does this stop the sound of the cat pounding around the room and jumping off your bed. But it feels incredible on your feet when you get up....which is why I do it (no neighbors below me).

You can also use towels over them etc, so most people probably have something to use, and if you have guests etc, you can just pick it all up and store it quickly.

Doesn't work if you let your cat run around the whole house at night, but just close your bedroom door so she can't do that, and your set:)

Cats can make a huge amount of noise depending on the apartment. We lived in an apartment in Pleasanton CA, with a neighbor above us who had 2 cats (we had both Siren and Wolfy at the time, so 2 cats as well). It sounded like 2 giants stomping all over the place all night lol. Since it was mostly low noise it did't bother me much but my wife hated it (I can't stand high pitched noises they keep me up...which we had inDublin not that far in the future from the laundry room near us).

Anyway we eventually moved to dublin primarily because of the noise from the cats. We never complained because it wasn't the neighbors fault, the roof/floor just amplified the sound a ton.

Not all homes are like that. My current one though does something similar, if someone upstairs gets up from a couch it sounds like armageddon downstairs lol.

Your neighbor needs to chill. Maybe they'll tolerate the cat sounds more if you blast techno and watch porn at full volume for a week.

You need to tell your neighbor that she is making more noise than your cat is, and that retaliating in such a way is unnecessary.

You can apologize for the cat but tell her that there's nothing you can do about it. You're allowed to have your pet. You aren't going to keep it confined for no reason. You have been a respectable neighbor in all respects, but you need to stand up for yourself on this to get to her to cut this shit out.

Also a good suggestion. Try insulating the noise somehow.

Agreed with RC. Your neighbor is a massive hypocrite, and it sounds like you're suffering more than her at this point. I know it's difficult to confront something like this, but nothing will change unless you talk to her or possibly the landlord.

Nice. I do like to scatter rag rugs around. They're cheap, colorful, good insulation, feel good on the feet, and the cat will like them too.

Have you considered tying ballonons to the cat to reduce its weight or maybe fitting it with some kind of glider

I vote for the baloon idea!!! Super high jumping cats everywhere!!!!

Just make sure they can't bite the string:)

Would also reduce their weight if they like to sleep on your side/kidney like mine does!
