Jim makes the argument that Ubisoft games are basically clones of each other. Do you agree?

I wouldn't say they're clones in as much as they're formerly very distinct games that have progressively adopted similar design choices.

I feel like most of Ubi's games have adopted a lot of open world ideas from Assassin's Creed, but frankly just like AC they're too shallow and formulaic to do anything other than superficially lengthen the amount of content a game has.

I'd rather have a short but highly original and innovative game than a really long game I've played a thousand times before, with same-y repetitive missions.

Well they did make For Honor and Rainbow Six Siege. It doesn't look their upcoming pirate game will have the same template either.

I mean, given the treatment they've given to a few of the companies they acquired after those smaller ones pumped out a hit title or two?

Yeah. They end up turning them in to the same formula they have for the games of that genre they already have. And it's terrible.

I think it would be fair to put Bethesda Softworks into this field as well. Fallout and Elder Scrolls are vastly different worlds but they all feel like practically the same game.

That's due in part to their insistence on using the same damn game engine for nearing on two decades. There isn't exactly a whole lot more they can do to expand on their gamepay systems in the gamebryo engine (which is what it is, no matter how hard they try to insist "Creation Engine" is all new). Obsidian essentially had to hack the game apart and then glue it back together with chewed gum just to implement a few basic features like slot machines and weapons that reload one round at a time into new vegas. Then again, their reliance on a painfully outdated engine stems from the general complacency of the studio, so the story probably wouldn't be much different even they licensed a different engine for a new game.

True, but Bethesda games have the benefit of several years in between releases. Ubisoft does yearly releases of its open world games, and they all blend together into a grey morass of open-world environments.
