Since December, four taxi drivers have killed themselves, seemingly in response to the intense financial pressures that have accompanied an increase in for-hire vehicles on the city's streets. Yesterday, after a 65-year-old driver hanged himself in his garage, more than 100 drivers gathered to mourn the spate of suicides and demand that the city government more tightly regulate their disruptors.

Why don't they just sign up for Uber instead of killing themselves

I feel the pain. These guys put in a lot of money and work for taxis, especially in NYC.

But unemployed people who don't want that traditional shit are caking right now.

My boys definitely are. They do the Hamptons and New Roc City/New Rochelle, and these motherfuckers bring home like 500 a night over 8-10 hours.

Meh, Uber/Lyft are objectively better. Taxi drivers also drive like shit and get into accidents on a regular basis with no fucks given.

I took an Uber today and he drove worse than a taxi driver. In fucking Boston, which is a shitshow in terms of driving.

I really don't feel bad for them. The government shouldn't interfere and destroy competition when uber offers an objectively better public service.

I mean, it's awful people took their life over this, but the "cab industry" is awful and I have no regrets to seeing it dismantled tbh.

Maybe if taxi's weren't forced to some idiotic system and weren't awful they'd be able to compete.

Taxis follow regulations. Uber does not. Let's not pretend like it's an even playing field.

What regulations?

I mean in particular their 'casinos' they are getting and are about to get stomped by the other casinos that are coming up.
The NYS Lottery is an unbelievably incompetent organization. They just had no competition.

Cab drivers are more dangerous in NYC since they are more focused on finding riders than they are on the road.

This is actually true. There's thousands of laws in cities like New York that govern the business of taxis that Uber is not subject to because of the ridesaharing loophole that they conveniently exploit. I say conveniently because it is actually in the publics interest.

Sounds like those regulations are shit and need to be redone to adapt. Uber and the like are superior services.

Basically, yes. But the Taxi's seem to want to remain in the past and not use this to lobby for change.

Yes they absolutely should, but there's no way to technically do that without upending the entire taxi industry there, which is what the issue is.

In Korea, the taxi service was so strong that Uber couldn't find a foothold for competition

In fact, the taxi service basically turned into Uber, with smartphone ordering and stuff

This is like the first ever case of "maybe they should have been working harder"
