Games like FF4 and Lost Odyssey let you start off as a badass character and keep them, making them more badass later.

Gosh I wish Lost Odyssey would get a PC port. >_>

It does make me wish that FF4's progression immediately following Mt. Ordeal would have been more of a struggle to get up to speed. It would've been very appropriate for storyline reasons - redemption is a hard road, and even with a good heart, casting off darkness for the light isn't done instantly.

You're a vengeful princess on her way to nuke the assholes who killed your husband, while those same jerks are intentionally instigating a world war because they think they can opportunistically use it to gain control of the world. It's not like Reks actually has good skills or anything. He's level one with cure and starter gear Ashe literally joins with all his skills and better shit an hour later.

it wasn't even an RPG, but the bakugan new vestroya game for the wii did this (the tutorial lets you use maxus drago, but it was a simulation, you don't actually get him until the final boss)

No, Ashe was great, as was literally every other character in that game, save for the two useless, breathing non-sequitirs called Van and Penelo <_<
