https://www.militaryrates.com/military-pay-charts-o1_o5_2018

Starting Pay - Pay Grade - Rank
$37,292.40 - O1 - Second Lieutenant
$42,964.68 - O2 - First Lieutenant
$49,724.64 - O3 - Captain
$56,555.76 - O4 - Major
$65,546.64 - O5 - Lieutenant Colonel
$78,627.48 - O6 - Colonel
$106,082.52 - O7 - Brigadier General (1 star)

Geez... you have to be a freaking general to break the $100k mark? Isn't it like almost impossible for someone to be a general? Only like less than 1000 people at a time can be one?

The pay also increases the longer you're in. They have other benefits - healthcare, food, housing, college afterwards.
After 6 years you're likely to be an O-3. That's $5,792.50/mo, or 69,510/yr.
Not the best, but not terrible by any means. You don't go into the military to get rich.

Officers get $246.24/mo for food:
http://militarypay.defense.gov/Pay/Allowances/BAS.aspx

And housing is dependent on your area:
https://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/pdcgi/bah/bahsrch.cgi

So for my area, O1 officers get $1,548/mo in housing; O7 gets $2,505/mo.

O1: Combining food and housing, the total "salary" is $56,114.64.
O7: Combining food and housing, the total "salary" is $139,097.40.

Yes, in the sense that entry-level, lowest-ranked officers only make that much a year.

Enlisted always give officers shit for making the big money.

I make just shy of $33K per year before taxes and I've only been in for 4 1/2 years.

Though I wouldn't trade our benefits for a higher paycheck.

I assume "E1 to E5" is the "enlisted"? Like E1 = Private?

Geez, they only make $19,658.88/year...

Last I checked (some...years ago), O-2 is guaranteed after 2 years assuming no problems and maybe (?) a basic course. Likely depends on branch.
O-3 actually has a board look at you, but as long as you're not a moron and not misbehaving, it's quite probable.
Anything above that is where it starts getting competitive.

don't forget things like tuition assistance and all the other programs as well. CLEPs (free) to get you the equivalent associate's degree then tuition assistance to get a bachelor's, master's, and even a PhD

health care care really add up as well if you've got any problems after you join. free meds and free scans are awesome. i'll be getting free laser eye surgery so i can finally ditch glasses

plus work experience could jump start your next job's starting salary

But to give some context

Typical time to go from e-1 to e-6 is anywhere from 5 to 10 years.

Typical time to get from O-1 to O-6 is 23 years of service.

So do you just get promoted given time, or is it actually merit-based?

That's their salary.

They also get money from war prizes and tons of VA benefits that normal civilians don't get.

There are probably bonuses too. Especially if you recruit people.

Merit based is a contributing factor. The military is like any other job, you do it well enough, impress you boss, and you get promoted.

E-1 through E-4 is time based, you'll be e4 at 2 years or less given you're not a total shit bag and you don't fuck up and get demoted or get an article 15.

E-5 and above has different requirements, starting with time in grade/rank requirements and time in service requirements. Then you have to go before a board get your promotable status and then go to Basic Leaders Course. Then depending on your MOS(military job) you have to have a certain amount of promotion points before you'll be picked to actually be promoted.

But this specifically for the Army. I don't know how other branches promote

Untreated mental problems lead to substance abuse

Also mostly poor people join and they didn't learn good finance sense growing up and most don't learn it while in so when they get out they struggle.
