It is an interesting question though, where the punishment should go in cases like these, where victims are used for further criminal activity. Well this case is pretty obvious since the main dude was directly brainwashing these people, so it should be easy to just point all the blame at him. But what about if there's a bit more indirection?

What if the main dude and she kept the cult going? The brainwashing is obviously still there, it's not going to magically go away. But then who's to blame? Or what if he gave her a choice to leave or to become "CEO" or something? If she stayed, her choice was still manipulated, but she still had some agency and responsibility there. Or is she just totally immune to all blame for the rest of her life because she was brainwashed once?

And then you get to more indirect stuff, like incels going on murder sprees because of incitement from Bannon or Alex Jones and such. We let those brainwashers completely off the hook even though they're doing the emotional manipulation as this cult leader, just on a different scale.

From a practical standpoint, the best punishment would be the one that best prevents the bad things from happening again. But morally there is no real correct answer to who deserves the blame.
