There is no denying at this point that Love, Simon is a cultural phenomenon. The film, centered around a gay teenager working his way through the coming out process, has received near-universal acclaim, and has made over $20 million at the box office domestically.

Perhaps a large part of why the film made such an impact at the box office in its second weekend is thanks to some of your favorite celebrities. A number of high-profile actors, musicians and Hollywood executives bought out local theaters this weekend so that more people could go see Love, Simon for free.

Has anyone else seen this film? It's pretty popular.

Same. I really enjoyed it.

That's the great thing about this film. It's themes are pretty universal, so anyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, can relate to the protagonist.

Though, I do think gay people will relate to it in a slighter deeper level.

my theater almost died with the dad grindr scene lol

but yeah, I agree that it has a lot of universal themes. it was a standard rom-com, but executed well

While the movie has done well given it's budget and distribution, I'm not sure I'd label a movie with a $20 million box office as a cultural phenomenon. I mean at a $17 million budget it hasn't, it's hard to categorically even label it as a full-blown success yet.

The book is VERY good.

I read it prior to watching the film.

Same XD

Also, the part where Simon kisses Blue while they're riding on the ferris wheel elicited a huge "awwwww" from the theater that I was at.

But yeah, it's pretty crazy how far we've come. Can you imagine if this movie was made 10 years ago? It probably would have bombed at the box office.

It was everything in a movie I wish I had watched 10 years ago

That's because it is. It's very good generic (like, 91% on RT good), but it's still generic.
Surprisingly a lot of comedy in it too.

Edit: read "shit" as "generic" for some reason.
