Yeah, I don't think so at all. I don't get why it all of a sudden got this status ranking up there with The Godfather and Casablanca. I think that's crazy.

It is a good movie though. I definitely think it's worth watching as long as you don't go in with crazy expectations.

all of a sudden

Well that's not true. It's always been in the top 3 on imdb, so the internet has always held it in very high regard. It was my favorite movie for a while before I really got into film

One of the few movies where the main character doesn't fall in love/have a woman

Why is it that he can hit a 3rd baseman on a frozen rope from 300 feet away, but he can't hit a 12 foot tall catcher from 60 feet 6 inches away?

All of the sudden? The Shawshank Redemption has been popular for a long time. It's been number one on IMDb's top 250 list for at least ten years.

Yeah and that was over ten years after its release.

I remember very clearly. First there was all this media attention because The Dark Knight was all of a sudden the number one highest rated movie. Then a year or so later it was Shawshank Redemption and I was like "Wha-?"

In 95 it got decent but not fantastic reviews. I remember seeing it and liking it okay. Then I never heard anybody talking about it. It certainly wasn't in any "best ever" lists that I remember seeing before the mid-2000s.

Apparently though there was a generation of kids watching it over and over again on cable and just falling in love with the movie, who propelled it to the status that it has today.

Don't get me wrong, I like the movie, but never got on board with the level of praise it got.

D'awww, that was really sweet. Andy's wife was hot. The "salvation is found within" bit was pretty sloppy foreshadowing. I knew exactly what was happening after that, but whatever, it was good to see a happy ending

Saddest part was when Brooks let Jake go

also I thought Tim Robbins wasn't very good in it. Kinda like a restrained Nic Cage.

and it was weird how after 19 years they didn't age. The main guard guy didn't age at all. They at least kinda spraypainted some gray into Andy's hair.
