The ending has the antagonist successfully get a peek into the afterlife and he drags the protagonist along for the ride. They see world of basalt blocks that rise to a black sky full of howling stars. A wide and endless line of naked humans are marched through it, driven by monstrous antlike creatures that attack and bite and beat them when they fall. The young, the old, teenagers with babies, children helping each other along, covered in wounds that never bleed. The protagonist realizes that the stars aren't stars at all, they're holes that scream with all-powerful, totally insane entities. The only one of these we meet is called Mother. The only thing we see of her is an enormous black leg covered in spiny fur that punches through the sky with a giant claw made of screaming human faces.

I read this shit like two years ago and I still think of it whenever something else I've read references the afterlife. Like Harry Potter and its love for being dead, I just imagine Ma and Pa Potter being marched around by giant ant-monsters while Lovecraftian monsters scream in the sky.

The book directly quotes Lovecraft at one point.
That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons even death may die.

Protagonist thinks of it when he sees the line of the dead after hoping that they somehow die again.

Also remember that Ma and Pa Kent are treated that way. And Superman will be there someday. And nothing will save those creatures on that day.

This is the kind of horror that actually terrifies me and that I actually enjoy.

Lovecraft's shit (and things that successfully take influence from his work) is so good because it fills you with a very real feeling of dread for your own insignificance and helplessness.

Is that the only part of the book that's like that, or is the whole thing working towards that/building to it?

Funnily enough, the book is like 90% about electricity so sort of.

The entire book leads up to it.
