Times were hard back then, I mean, it would be pretty easy for somone to just murder another for a few KGs of gold and that would be enough dosh for them to permanently change states and never even be recognized as a criminal.

Like, wow you struck gold... now you are literally carrying 500k-millions worth in your suitcase and you have to travel hundreds of miles on a damn horse to trade it, like wow, totally not dangerous as hell.

Armed caravans still got robbed

Couriers also could take it on behalf of a client to somebody for appraisal or whatnot and I'm sure some just walked off with it and kept it for themselves

The Wild West (and similar areas) was actually extremely tame given the circumstances. People probably didn't want to get hanged by the victim's pissed off family or the various townsfolk.

couldnt you just move far away if you killed someone and stole a few pounds of gold (ie 6 figures by todays standards)?

I mean, the average person was poor as hell back then and its not like we have cameras to show that you murdelized some guy last night before you disappeared to another town 300 miles away
