'99 was a pretty solid movie year: Fight Club, The Matrix, Sixth Sense, American Beauty, The Green Mile just to name a few.

It wasn't even THAT great, especially in retrospect. And even at the time, I felt like The Thirteenth Floor handled the actual concept more interestingly while Dark City did the tone and ambience better. All The Matrix really had going for it was the action, the style, and the bullet time.
