Looking to spend around $500, maybe some more if it makes a big enough difference. It'd mostly just be used for school.

For $250 you can do a lot worse than a refurbished elite book. It's half his budget so he could even buy two in case one falls apart.

There are no decent laptops sub 500. Just the same old generations old proc, shit RAM, 500g hdd and an optical drive if you're lucky. I miss when the Lenovo y series was solid. Probably still better than now.

Lol I don't know anything about laptops, how much does a decent one usually go for? I don't need anything too crazy powerful, just something that doesn't slow to a crawl when I have more than 1 tab open like the shitty one I have now.

Well, what is your budget? Can you afford to spend $800 to $1000?

I guess I might as well splurge if it's worth it, what would you recommend in that price range?

There are some pretty great laptops around the $600-800 range.

$500 you'll probably get something not that great unless you get lucky.

Are you going to be in college for four years? If so, I personally would recommend the Dell XPS line. You can get a nice Dell XPS 15 for $1000. I personally would spend $1350 to get the model with the dedicated graphics card so you could do some gaming.

I own a Dell XPS 15 from two years ago and it's been a fantastic device.

If you don't want to spend that much but still wanna do some gaming, I recommend one of these bad boys:

I'd go for the $950 model.

Honestly I've liked Dell's laptops <_>

Inspiron 15 5000 range should be able to run most things in terms of games. Won't be kicking graphical ass but for the price range that should do?

Looking now I have no idea why they still use 1TB 5600RPM drives, that's shit. Higher end has SSD for OS drive and then the 1TB slow drive, but eh

He can spend a little more to get the 7000 series which is far better.

Not bad, although the 7000 series has an option in the same price range with a 1050ti in it. Should perform noticeably better than a regular 1050.

If ur willing to spend $1000, Thinkpad T business series will last you forever, if not at least a decade. My sister bought one in 2006, she still uses it now. I bought a t460 2 years ago and its been running super smooth absolutely no issues. I think theres a new line out, t470. I just browsed it quickly but it looks like a beast of a laptop. Aside from all those specs, some cool thinks about Thinkpads are theres 2 batteries, 1 internal and 1 external. I think the t470 runs for 18 hours. But if you're running low on battery, you can just swap out the external battery for a new fully charged battery and keep going longer, all without having to plug it in. (Sold seperately). The frame itself is durable af, you can drop your laptop without any issues. It can take a beating. Also, thinkpad parts are highly interchangable. If years down the line your keyboard fucks up, or mousepad, or anything, its very easy to buy second hand parts and replace em yourself. Im really shitty with hardware and I was able to replace the harddrive for an SSD and upgrade the ram myself. Also Im pretty sure the keyboard is spill proof.

Ive used Acer, HP, Dell, and Asus in the past, and this thinkpad is by far my favorite.
