- Someone I don't know of ambiguous gender (until I know for certain)
- Someone I know that requests it
- Someone that I'd rather not out as trans, either by request or by circumstance (i.e. it'd be likely to cause a scene)

I mean...this is not wrong.

I reserve they/them for three categories:

- Someone I don't know of ambiguous gender (until I know for certain)
- Someone I know that requests it
- Someone that I'd rather not out as trans, either by request or by circumstance (i.e. it'd be likely to cause a scene)

That last one can be iffy depending on location and who is around. But otherwise, you seem to get it.

And of course it's right, it's a necessity to know these things given my position.

If I call someone they/them, its not to be offensive, I just might not be able to tell if they're a man or woman. With cis people too lol.

He or she. Pick one. I only use "they" if I'm talking about multiple people or I don't actually know the person's sex.
