The tweet, posted on 19 March, read: I was shouted at by men at my first Labour Party meeting aged 18 because I asked them to remove a Page 3 calendar. Ive been told to toughen up, be louder, stronger, independent. Ive often not felt supported. Men in dresses get brocialist solidarity I never had. Thats misogyny! The post still appears amongst the 19,000 tweets Rowling has liked on Twitter. In response to somebody asking the Twitter account what they meant by their tweet, they replied: Im saying transwomen have no right to take womens places in politics. Im saying theyre protected by brocialists in ways women havent been. Im saying transwomen are currently being heard more than women and actively silencing women in debate. Im saying transwomen are men. However, Rowlings rep told Metro.co.uk: Im afraid J.K. Rowling had a clumsy and middle-aged moment and this is not the first time she has favourited by holding her phone incorrectly. The like gained notice when trans journalist Shon Faye, who is referred to by her dead name on the offending tweet, saw that Rowling had liked it, and tweeted: Trans culture is seeing the beloved author of your generation like a transphobic tweet from a troll account which has repeatedly called you a man. Jack Monroe, aka the Bootstrap Cook, added: Wait so @jk_rowling wrote books where the characters could literally transform into cats and dead people but trans folk are beyond all comprehension? Men in dresses from a woman who literally made a fortune writing about MEN IN DRESSES? Waahh what this is just so crappy. And many Harry Potter fans who saw the like were just as furious. One person replied: Do you realise what youve liked here @jk_rowling ? This tweet is hugely offensive and anti-trans. It does seem to be calling out clear sexism in the labor party, and that's something Rowling would be quick to chastise. But then I read the rest of the profile, and the kindest thing I can offer is that it looks like she didn't read it all, and (hopefully) accidentally retweeted some mess. It really lays out that TERFs seem to think transwomen really are just men in drag, and that sexual predation is an intrinsic characteristic of the male body (perhaps even biology) instead of a collection of toxic invasive behaviors. They don't know shit, and don't care enough to learn, because their animating principle is that all of it is wrong and none of it is worth the attention.
