Bolt should be higher, Phelps and maybe Shawn White should be on there over a few, but other than that I agree.

Bolt, Serena, and Messi should probably be higher. Peyton lower for sure. Also agree on adding Phelps and Id take off Trout. Guy is amazing (though fuck Mike Trout) but hes waaay too young for this list.

Guessing longevity doesn't matter as Tiger Woods hasn't done anything in over a decade.

Look up what Tiger did his first like 10 years. Guy was beyond amazing.

ESPN.. Zero mention of any NHL players.. shocking.

Sidney Crosby doesn't compare to Nascar tbh, it's obviously harder to drive than do what Crosby has done in his career, carried a team on his back as a teenager, the championships, getting through severe concussions and returning to be just as dominant. Nah, this guy can press down a gas pedal and steer man. Let me tell ya.

Interesting idea. Even though the matches are 'scripted' it would be interesting to know his total win-loss record. Although we can't see him so it might be pointless adding him to the list.

There is no competition to a scripted event like pro wrestling. It's all predetermined, therefore "dominance" is impossible when you are just acting out how someone else writes it up. I don't think he would have a place fairly on a list like this.

Again, look up what Tiger did for the first decade of this data. Guy dominated his sport like none other. He also didnt just do prize fights which is what Floyd has done for most of his past fights.

Because while he's undeniably an athlete, they're probably only counting competitive athletes. It's kinda hard to judge someone's objective rating as an athlete within their respective sport when said sport has scripted outcomes and events.

I'll grant you Brady, but a list taking into account the last 20 years doesn't favor Bonds or Trout who didn't compete in half of them.

Could Big Show hit a hole in one at the Phoenix Open? Win 79 PGA tours? 14 majors? Don't think so.

Trying to cross compare athletes dumb. In most cases even a D list athlete in one sport would be be better at that sport than an A list superstar from another sport crossing into the other sport. Remember when Michael Jordan played baseball? Even if he'd been in his physical prime he probably still wouldn't have been great, just like if you threw MLB superstars into the NBA.

Bonds: cheater
Trout: too young for the top of this list. do it in 10 more years and he'll be top 3 easy if he keeps his current pace
Brady: low, but he himself didn't really "dominate". His team did. He did pretty good-excellent, but I wouldn't say he "dominated"

Anyways, here's how ESPN is doing the math here:

We used our unpatented five-step process to determine the most dominant athletes of the past 20 years. First we looked at the top league in every sport that has global annual revenues of $100 million or more and for which there are reliable annual overall rankings or ratings of individual athletes for all or most of the past 20 years. Then we rated those sports' athletes in each of the past 20 regular seasons by the best single performance metric available, adjusted these ratings to normalize athletes' scores in each sport across time, narrowed our focus to the top four athletes each year in every sport, then adjusted the data again to put these players, across sports, on a common baseline. Then we added up the results to achieve this list, in which one "dominance share" equals one standard deviation of performance by an athlete beyond the top four players in his or her sport for one season.

Metrics
MLB: Wins above replacement (WAR), according to FanGraphs; NBA: Value above replacement player (VORP), according to Basketball-Reference.com; NFL: Defense-adjusted yards above replacement (DYAR), according to Football Outsiders; NHL: Goals vs. threshold (GVT), according to Hockey Prospectus; WNBA: Win shares, according to Basketball-Reference.com; ATP, Formula One, WTA: Tour or championship points; LPGA, NASCAR, PGA: Prize earnings; FIFA, International Cricket Council, World Rugby: Player of the year voting; Boxing, MMA: ESPN, The Ring and FightMatrix pound-for-pound rankings; Olympic track and field: Track & Field News rankings

So Bonds, for example, is really getting credit here only for those years in which he led the league in WAR (there were five of them, 00-04). Judge for yourself whether that's a good way of measuring dominance, but this isn't an opinion list.

Bonds didn't just lead the league, he dominated.

He was just a cheat. It's sad to see too, because before he blew up cause of the roids, he was a HoF lock from his Pittsburgh days. Guy is the only member of the 500-500 club.

Trout has a good chance of surpassing him though. Bonds had like 160ish WAR in 20 years (not counting 2005 when he played 14 games) and Trout already has 54 in 6. Maybe Trout can even surpass the Babe.
