Count Dankula is the YouTubers who, a couple years ago, taught his girlfriend's dog to emulate the Nazi salute. As a joke to mess with his girlfriend.

He has now been convicted of a hate crime by a Scottish court and will be sentenced next month.

That's a nice thought, but it doesn't seem to change was seems to be the left leaning government from arresting, prosecuting, etc people for online "hate speech". It wasn't long ago that we saw articles reporting on European governments demanding social media sites double down on offensive speech.

As I recall, in the video he was prosecuted for, he explains that he wanted to teach the dog to do one of the most offensive things he could think of. As a practical joke to annoy his girlfriend.

The, apparently convincing, rationale of the prosecution that convicted him was basically "it takes too much time and effort to train a dog for it to really be just a joke." So, because his joke consisted more than a passing remark, he must actually hate Jews.

It seems in Scotland/UK, making offensive jokes is enough to have the government prosecute you for hate speech.

He won't be the first to serve a jail sentence in the UK over just saying or doing something offensive online, but it may be one of the more frivolous cases.

Supposedly he didn't receive a single direct complaint from the video. The only person brought to the stand to prove that it was "grossly offensive" was the hate crimes officer that booked him in the first place. The prosecution didn't bring forward a single witness to make their case... and he STILL lost.

This is akin to anti-blasphemy laws you might find in theocratic states. Though I doubt the severity of his punishment will be as severe, the fact that he can be convict of the crime of making an offensive joke is awful.

I don't have a problem with the anti-hate crime laws in place, but I do have a problem with this guy being sent down for it. I think his joke was pretty tasteless, but obviously not actually a hate crime.

And if people are gonna get political about it, this is 100% the authoritarian right taking advantage of something in order to punish more people.
