I assume they need them for practical purposes.

I buy big things. And help lots of people with it. Moving stuff. And for moving. And I can get people to pay me to use it. Not exactly for work. But I can make money. And help people...

I never understood why people buy trucks as a regular vehicle. They are usually harder on gas and such, and just not practical as a reuglar commuting vehicle.
I understand if you use it to haul stuff around alot of the time though.

My dad worked at a truck detailing store. This is almost always the case.

It is weird, though. You would think they are really tough people, however, where I train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu the "big truck people" are the first to get submitted over and over and quit after a month.

I used to have trucks, too, and they were far better for moving. Moving sucks in a car.

It's annoying because they don't seem to make small pickup trucks anymore. They're all these 4-door, six or seven foot tall monstrosities. I guess they're trying to make them more of an all-purpose vehicle, but to have a 4-door pickup it has to be insanely huge. And it's not like they're good vehicles for families, so do they really need that much passenger space?

I'm not sure I understand it either, but perhaps, as devil's advocate, one could argue for safety reasons?

It's probably safer for the people in the truck, but those crazy sizes just make them even more of a danger for pedestrians and people in smaller vehicles

I drive a 20-year-old Ford F150. I primarily drive it to work and back, of which I do in-house IT work. Sure, I would love a smaller, more fuel-efficient car, but I just keep the following in mind:

1. The truck is fully-paid off.
2. Insurance every six months is 149.21.
3. If I were to replace this truck with something newer, my insurance would skyrocket and I'm not financially-equipped to handle the rise in insurance, nor the new car.

It sucks, but it gets me from A to B. It has nothing to do with ego or compensating manhood. It's just a vehicle.

No, they dont usually need them for work. I live in an energy corridor where practically everyone with good money works in the energy industry - there are tons of chemical plants in my general vicinity. You go around to all the plant office buildings and you can bet their parking lots are chock full of trucks. This while the workers just sit around on computers all day and if they do go out to a plant...I mean, alright, but youre not off-roading for one second or using your vehicle for any work purpose. Its just that male ethos pretty much.

That doesn't explain why you got an F150 in the first place, though. You didn't mention anything about hauling, so everything else you said would be true of most other 1998 cars.

I do know a lot of poeple around here that go off-roading. Or use it for camping. Or fishing(towing a boat around). Maybe for those reasons...

It was originally my uncle's, then my mom's, then my sister's when she got her license, and then mine, since I got my license a lot later than most people do.

I don't do much hauling. If anything, it's usually just used for moving furniture, taking yard waste to the dump, or when the situation calls for it, transporting boxed equipment at work between sites.

Yeah. But people buy lots of cars for whatever reason. Lots of people buy expensive cars that are not gas efficient or even really that good just because they're expensive and want to show off. I know people who buy a car because it's expensive. And won't even drive it. Barely takes it out of the garage. At least most of the people I know with a trick use it for some purpose. Most go camping or off-roading. Lots of them do DIY projects every weekend. And a good amount go camping. And some people just like trucks. Just like a lot like cars... I understand that you said you weren't judging all truck owners, but it sort of sounded like it...

I have a 2014 Dodge Ram 1500. I used to drive a car.

I bought a truck because I was sick of the inability to transport large items with a car. Need to move furniture? Ask a friend with a truck (good luck) or rent a U-Haul (excessive to just move one thing). Need to make a run of tree trimmings from the yard to the dump? Place it the alley, call the city to pick it up, wait ~4 months.

I only transport a load in the truck bed maybe once per month, but I'm really happy with my purchase. As for fuel economy, it really isn't that bad. I use about 10 liters per 100 kilometers driven which is comparable to my old car.

Also having 4WD in the winter is fucking amazing.

I've seen U-Haul pickup trucks. You can also rent pickups from Home Depot

In America at least, I don't know if Canada is different

Also I realize this doesn't describe every truck, and some of these aren't standard, but here's a list of why they are annoying to me:

- Low fuel economy
- Diesel ones have bad exhaust (especially people who roll coal)
- They're huge, make it harder for other drivers to see (especially people who have lift kits)
- Take up so much space in a parking lot that other cars can't easily park next to them
- Generally make bad passenger cars
- Rally loud, it sucks having one idle next to you or drive past when your windows are down

This is why I get annoyed with people who drive trucks that they make sparing use out of. We have so many other vehicles around that are better overall. Obviously you sacrifice some things when choosing one type of vehicle over another, but that's true whether you buy a sedan or truck. There are valid reasons to have a truck, but I think they appeal a little too much to the idea of American excess and arrogance. Companies just seem to keep making them bigger and bigger, and the advertising campaigns machoer and machoer.

I think the one guy said about 1 a month. Me, personally, a few times a month on average. But it can be higher if I've been helping out some people a little more...

Yeah, not really that much money when the alternative of buying a truck is like $10,000+ more than just getting a normal car. Let's see, I don't know how accurate these numbers are, but according to Google a new Honda Civic (one of the most popular sedans) starts at about $19k, and a new Ford F150 (one of the most popular trucks) starts at about $28k. And, of course, the more expensive the vehicle, generally the more expensive it is to register and insure...

Why are there more trucks in the U.S. than any other nation, but North Americans commute more and live in more spread out distances?
