because it's at that weird transition point between kid book and more mature story. 1-3 are clearly for kids. 5-7 are much darker in comparison. 4 started all kiddie and had the silly tournament and got real dark real fast.

It's probably the 2nd best after the 3rd one tbh. I think Rowling watched DBZ before she wrote it. With the tournament and beam struggle.

I know it's weird, but that's when I started to check out when I was reading the books. I get what they were going for, but I guess I just liked the more whimsical nature of the early books. I only got halfway through Order of the Phoenix then I gave up.

Most of the book is filler though. Mostly to explain Voldemort's origins.

It is very good, but that lady just kills it for me with all she gets away with.

Just to be clear I like all the movies, but ootp is my least favorite the stuff without that lady whos name escapes me is great, but her parts just bring the movie down, especially with no real fitting punishment for her by movie end imo.

I hated her but I enjoy her role in the book if that makes sense. As Scar and Tmaster said my main problem is how little happens in the book. I feel it just drags, and drags, and drags. It makes sense in a way, giving Harry's feelings in the book but it boring as hell.

Bellatrix? Never seen the movie and was the lay book I read...

Actually I lied. I read the first 15-20 chapters and skipped to the last 10 and felt like I didn't miss anything. OOTP sucked imo and made me lose interest. First 4 books where good, TGOF being best imo.

The book literally begins with the first use of the Dark Mark seen in fifteen years. It's the first time the series confirms for us in no uncertain terms that the Death Eaters are alive and well in Britain.

And over the course of that book you learn more about the Death Eaters did and why they were so feared. You learn about the unforgivable curses. You learn about the Longbottoms and why Neville lives with his grandma. And this is the first time in the series someone has put a plan in motion specifically with the purpose of killing Harry.

Personally, I don't think any of the Harry Potter books are filler, perhaps least of all this one.

I can see that. It's my least favorite as well because everyone's flaws are on full display there and the ending is such a downer. Still, we're going to need everything this book sets up in the next book. This is the rising action for our third act.

Great write up. Really shows how the tone of the book sets the series on a more serious path. Before Voldemort and the Death Eaters were essentially boogiemen.

Yep Umbridge that is the one. Bellatrix was at least interesting and got a fairly decent comeuppance in the end while I dont know what Umbridge got for her deeds in the end but by the movies not much other than a stupify spell to the face. I could be forgetting something though or maybe the books gave her a fitting punishment.
