My Dad always says "yeah" when he answers the telephone.

In the beginning days of the telephone 'Ahoy hoy' was the standard greeting when one answered the phone. It was later replaced by 'hello' and then 'who dis?'

I don't think I say "hello" at any time other than when I answer a phone.

Otherwise it's "hi" or "hey". Both of those would be awkward af on the phone.

When I was young I use to answer the phone with 'Who is it?' as if the ringing was the same as someone knocking on the door.

Now that caller ID and storing a persons number are things that exist I usually answer with 'hey' followed by their name.
