People gave the RDJ movies a lot of shit for making him a boxer, but he legitimately was one. There's even one story where the bad guy bends a steel fireplace poker to show how strong he is. Sherlock casually bends it back into shame after he leaves. He's also quite sociable and aware of other people's feelings. So the BBC one is basically nothing like the original.

There's also a couple that are sort of odd to read. One story involves a dude who's had a couple of Alabama-born family members die shortly after getting mail marked KKK. The solution? They were being murdered by the KKK. I guess 1800s British society wasn't very aware of the KKK.

I've mentioned this several times that the 2009 Sherlock holmes movie with rdj was surprisingly very similar to the original source material, blackwood nonsense aside. But then again I don't know why you listen to others that criticize it for the reason you mention, because back in 2009 people were actually criticizing the movie for not making Watson a fat, bumbling oaf but instead a handsome Jude Law looking doctor about to get married. Being completely unaware that the books have Watson like that and it was only the tv series that turned Watson into a portly sidekick.

But yeah the original stories are still pretty good. The BBC Sherlock also has similarities to the short stories though. Both of those adaptations have similarities to the source material.

How are you reading them? I have the complete collections Volumes 1 and 2, 700 pages a piece and they were quite a long read. I got through volume 1 around 6 years ago, and am planning to read Volume 2 this very summer coincidentally enough.

elementary was a pretty good take on sherlock for its first season
i kind of stopped watching after awhile cause its second and third seasons were not as good.

The early movies are better known then the actual original books so they are seen by many as the real version.

It's a collection called The Original Illustrated Sherlock Holmes. I don't know if it's all of them. It has "37 short stories plus a complete novel comprising THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, THE MEMOIRS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, and THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES."

Hmm that does sound like it covers most of them, so you should be good. If it has stories like the sign of four, scandal in bohemia, the 5 orange pips, blue carbuncle, a study in scarlet etc, then it probably has most. As well as the hounds of b. You'll note the similarities and differences when you read the short stories that the bbc series adapted. At least in the beginning, I haven't bothered watching the rest of the series until I finish volume 2 (out of principle)

Just read the return of sherlock holmes last. Oh if you have the final problem read it before the return of sh.

They're fun enough stories. I like seeing how they proved inspiration for a ton of different characters and works the last century.

Yeah, they are neat. The RBJ was actually really close to the orignial stories. Most versions are enjoyable in their own way, though.
