The probability is 1/2700 as of now. That is subject to change as the asteroid gets closer and we're better able to observe its trajectory. The point being, the risk right now is high enough and time ample enough that we should seriously consider our options.

Use a nearly-pure-fusion nuke like Tsar Bomba was. Yes, there may still be a bit of radioactive fallout from it, but what's worse - a minor amount of radioactive fallout that, realistically, probably is miniscule compared to the amount already in the atmosphere from previous nuclear tests and power plant failures like Chernobyl / Fukushima; or the world getting fucked up the ass by a mega asteroid?

I guess nobody read that it has a 1/2,700 chance of hitting the Earth.

If it stays that way, than you'd have to be paranoid to worry about it.

Thank you for your hilariously worthless opinion.

1/2700 chance is ridiculously high for when factoring in a risk matrix that has a damage scale on the level of "Astronomical impact".

There's a reason why people like you do not make decisions.

Ms Howley said: "The probability of a Bennu impact may be 1 in 2,700 today, but that will almost certainly change for better or worse as we gather more data about its orbit.
Delay is the greatest enemy of any asteroid deflection mission. Thats why theres urgency in getting viable deflection platforms on the shelf today.

planet X could be real? Nibiru or whatever it's called.

First of all, we'll be dead at that point.

Secondly, Bennu has a 1 in 2,700 chance of striking Earth on September 25, 2135. Don't get hysterical just yet.

So, yeah. This is a nice little info.

I don't know why you'd want to destroy the asteroid; that just increases the chance of fragments hitting the Earth. All you need to do is change its trajectory.

Yeah, 1/2700 isn't a very significant chance, but if it happens, the consequences are terribly significant. if the earth gets hit by that rock we are FUCKED. the article didn't go into what would happen if something of that size hit us but i suspect those that survived would be living in a nightmare. it's not like we'll have the capability to live elsewhere in 100 years.

so yeah, i think 1/2700 chance for humanity to be practically wiped out is something we ought to take rather seriously.

If the odds are only 1 in 2700, I don't think there's much reason to worry. Besides, this is over 100 years into the future. At the rate technology is currently advancing, there's no telling what kinds of weapons and gadgets we'll have by then. We may very well be able to actually deflect a meteor of that size by that point.

i think that's the hard part. they said the best technology we have for that right now wouldn't even budge it because it's so massive.

In the case of Bennu, scientists have deemed HAMMER inadequate as it would be unable to nudge the massive asteroid off course.

1200 megatons

At first I was like "okay so it's like a big nuke, whatever, hope it's not a populated area"

But apparently Tsar Bomba, the largest nuclear explosion, was 50 megatons.

So yeah we'd be a little fucked.

which is an awful long time when you're talking about technology and scientific progress.

i think we can figure it out if we invest ample resources into the problem, especially considering it should be a global effort.
