I've always been told that you should not drink old bottled water because it contains particles of the bottle, so this seems plausible

Supposedly, these particles increase rapidly if the bottled water is kept under hot temperatures for an extended period of time (like inside a car on a hot summer day).

The problem with drinking tap water alternatively is that its quality depends on your neighborhood. Some areas have tap as bad as Flint's, or worse (as in literally, one NYC neighborhood was found to have tap with more pollutants than Flint's literally poisoned water).
