Just finished Danganronpa 1+2 and really enjoyed them. I'm mostly interested in the plot of UDG, but is the action decent enough? Also, Toko is probably my least favorite character out of both games and since she's the star of this one that's really scaring me off too.

I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure if you would tbh.

It's alright. Gameplay was okay but nothing mindblowing, story was good. It fills in some loose ends from both DR1 and 2, so it was worth it to me on that level.

How much story/dialogue is there? Obviously I don't expect nearly as much as if it was a mainline game, but is there enough there to warrant not just googling a summary or something?

It's kind of formulaic tbh, but I thought it was worth watching. Don't get the same experience reading wiki articles than actually seeing it with danganronpa.

I think it's at least worth watching over a summary. There's a lot of really good stuff in terms of character interactions and mind-gameplay dialogue. It gives Toko a ton of development, and honestly, the Toko & Komaru dynamic is one of the best parts of the game.

For what it's worth, I was really ehh on Toko before UDG, but it made me appreciate her quite a bit.

Somewhat related question, I heard Danganronpa v3 isn't a continuation of the first two games, without spoiling anything, is that true? Also when people say the ending of 3 sucks are they referring to the game or the anime, since they're apparently completely different?

That's fair. I got UDG on PS4 for $10 around Halloween on a PSN sale.

DRV3 is a new story altogether. Apparently the team was split in terms of half of them wanting to finish the DR1/2 storyline, while the other half wanted to start a new storyline altogether. This resulted in half working on the anime and half working on V3.

Honestly, I could see comments about the ending sucking applying to either. V3's ending was really controversial, and while I've come to really like it, I was pretty mixed on it when I beat the game. The anime sort of falls entirely flat in the last few episodes with a lot of things fizzling out without proper development and a really really dumb mastermind twist. I could see people saying that either ending sucks, but I think V3's ending is one that takes some time and real thought to fully appreciate.

Play it before you watch DR3 since it ties into the anime.

Play v3 after you've finished UDG/DR3.

So if you're a fan of Max Payne, Uncharted, or circa 2013 Tomb Raider, then you'll be right at home.

it's funny because both have godawful endings, just in different ways

shame because DRV3 is otherwise the best in the series
