Whether in business, financial situations or life in general , can someone explain why it's advised to not compare yourself to other people in terms of success?

so then wouldn't the drive and motivation to be as successful as them or more be a good thing?

Depends what you mean by compare

Reading biographies of successful people to get an idea of how they got there and what you may be doing wrong isn't necessarily a bad idea, although the biographies are often way embellished however.

Seriously though, because it'll make you feel like a failure.

1. Everyone's definition of success is different. For some, making millions of dollars is success; to others, just making it through the day is success. If you compare yourselves to others, you're inevitably going to fall short because their success is not your's.

2. Everyone's circumstances are different, and you have no idea what that successful person went through to get to where they are. You're just viewing a highlight reel of their life, and not the struggles it took them to get there.

3. When you see someone else's success compared to your own, it makes it seem like the path is so much longer than it is. You can only see the end goal, and not the progress.

4. All of these points together makes it easy to overwhelm a person and make them feel like a failure. You don't get the "drive and motivation" to succeed, you just decide it's too much and there's no point in trying.

All of this comes from personal experience, btw.
