I'm sure some games implement it a lot better, we have an entire survival genre too if one wants more mechanics but I find most survival modes just not fun or worth my time.

You mean like Fallout 4s survival mode?

I hated playing New Vegas' hardcore mode and made a conscious effort to beeline towards the endgame (I just wanted the achievement)

I was okay with New Vegas mode, mainly because I had the canteen. FO4s was too excessive with the random illnesses youd always get, to the point where your character was always gimped in some way within 5 minutes of leaving home.

I like the idea of managing hunger and thirst in games like these, but its hard to get right.

I never tried it out in Fallout 4 because it sounded annoying, plus the whole not being able to save anywhere in a Bethesda game

I feel like the problem with a lot of hunger/thirst systems is that they work around game time instead of real time and so they have you scrounging around for food way too frequently.

I'd just rather play survival game like The Long Dark instead of Fallout with a tacked on survival mode.

I find they become too trivial and a non issue after a few hours.

Really depends on the game. In an effort to make skyrim enjoyable I added a camping and weather survival mode that I think is pretty cool. But in other stuff like, I dunno.. Subnautica, I'll turn off the hunger bar because that game is plenty fun without that extra shit

Unless the game is intentionally built around it as a core concept, and does it properly (because it's easy to mess up), it's almost always outright trash and a waste of everything. It's usually just more tedium.

Kingdom Come is probably the most recent example of it being trash.

almost always a nay
mechanics like survival mode, durability, weight, etc. always seem to exist only to drag out the game. they don't add to it, especially as they tend to almost always become nonexistent after some time in the game
