I keep seeing this Ancestry.com ad where a guy finds out he is 6% native and he suddenly changes his whole life to reflect it and joins a tribe. I only care about stuff that I am like around 25% at least, usually.

My interest in my background is just a) always nice to find out some history and b) which teams to kind of root for but not really in the Olympics when the USA isn't so hot.

Then again, I have some pretty brutal Afrikaner history in my lineage, so ignoring the past is something that I've gotten a bit used to.

it shows a bunch of natives walking the trail of tears or something, in the past. and then this guy is talking about how he is native american even though it shows the results and it's only 6%. Then it shows him at a reservation talking to tribal elders about his heritage that is just a drop in his blood.

I'd say heritage is important to an extent in the USA but not like that.

If I found out I was a quarter black nothing in my life would change.

That said when someone asks "what are you?"

My answer is Irish (with the American obviously implied to anyone with half a brain before this board decides to have an angry European attack me). That distinction is sort of important American because while we'll have much more in common with other Americans than the country of heritage there are certain cultural differences that do make the groups distinct.

Has anyone submitted samples to two or more of these ancestry services? Im curious because I was reading that these services work off their own databases, so its not uncommon (or so Ive heard) that one service can yield a somewhat different result from another services findings.

23andme is better imo, and they're having a big update in the coming months that'll be rolled out to everyone for free. they basically have 31 regions right now and are adding 120, so it'll get more detailed
