Nier Automata has extremely awkward movement. They set up a pseudo-open world where everything is boxed in by invisible walls and there's a lot of awkward screen transitions from 2d to 3d movement and back, like Pascal's Village. The game is really hard to even play in some of those moments

the castle in the forest in particular is atrocious

Every dungeon in Star Ocean 3.

It had a few okay ones

But I'll grant you that half of them were longer than necessary given the distance between save points. Even worse when you know you'll have to go back through later with the ring of disintegration.

Costlemark tower in Ffxv. Entirely because of the horrible cube puzzle part. And if you make the wrong turn at the fork during one part of it, you end up fighting 3 red giants, one Medusa snake thing, and like 20 flans.

The final dungeon of SMTIV Apocalypse, while not as bad imo as people make out, is this massive, confusing multi floor dungeon with a really garish design which makes it really frustrating to traverse.

The 3DS remake of dragon quest vii has really bad dungeon design in the sense that monsters now appear on screen but in many cases the dungeons haven't been changed to accommodate this. So you end up with narrow hallways and MASSIVE monsters meaning most of the time it's impossible to dodge battles anyway.

Fifth ark? You mean because of the two branching paths in the second half which have missable chests in them? Like the rest of the game it's basically just one long hallway.

Fifth Ark is the LONGEST FUCKING HALLWAY in the game. Nothing happens its just move forward and fight fairly powerful enemies you can't just dispatch in a single hit, therefore padding its length even further. At least in the rest of the game there's fairly often "story-related" cutscenes or an explorable open world on Pulse. Fifth Ark is the shitty culmination of 13's garbage design philosophy.

Also, keeping with the theme of Final Fantasy, Chapter 13 in FFXV is the worst dungeon in gaming, I just remembered now.

Or at least it was before they "updated" it.

The first section if smtiv Apocalypse's final dungeon made me physically ill.

The teleporters or whatever were also a puzzle and so without a guide, figuring them out took longer than necessary. and there were several distinct teleporter puzzles. :(

Spirit Crucible Elpys in Xenoblade Chronicles 2

This dungeon deliberately limits your combat and, in some cases, movement options, which makes every battle an absolute chore, and enemies will often crowd you. Basically requiring the patience of a saint, luck, or overlevelling to the point where the enemies don't bother you anymore. The dungeon design is crap too. It's definitely the worst in the Xenoblade series.

It's kinda hilarious how obnoxious they tried to make it tbf.

Maybe I got lucky though cos I felt as long as I kept moving forward (and using the numbered teleporters on each floor as a reference) that I didn't struggle too badly with getting through it.

I came in here to post this very dungeon for this exact reason. I got the platinum about 2 weeks ago and this dungeon was the last thing I needed for the royal arms. I spent 5 hours (yes 5 fucking hours) running that cube puzzle without knowing it was a puzzle. I finally resorted to looking up a youtube video which is something I never do.

I'm sure I've encountered much worse, but in Skyward Sword you encounter some puzzles where you have to like rotate shapes a certain way to open doors or whatever, and I literally quit the game at what I presume is like the boss room in the first dungeon because of the shit motion controls tied to that puzzle. Motion controls are legit my least favorite game design.

I can empathize with this. Im playing through Skyward Sword right now. The mine cart roller coaster in the Sand Sea made me rage so hard because of that motion control gimmick. I wanted to turn it off after only 10 minutes of trying. Just that feeling that theres a good chance you didnt do anything wrong, but the controller interpreted your movement incorrectly causing you to fail and redo the section is so frustrating.

Worst - Wizardry 1, Floor 3.

Giant grid that loops around on itself. Some of the intersections will rotate you in a random direction. There is no minimap. Most hallways look identical. The Ms are distinct messages, but as you can tell, they also appear in multiple spots.

The only way to truly get your bearings is by casting a spell with finite charges that tells you your x/y position. There is no "exit" spell, you need to hoof back up to return to base to rest up. Oh, and there is no "save" feature. If you get truly lost here, and the monsters eventually get the best of you, that's it. Your party dies; they becomes a lump of corpse and loot on the floor. A second party can be leveled/created to fetch them and drag them back, but that involves FINDING them as well in this hellhole and then getting out yourself.

I don't think you could really remake skyward sword without the motion controls since like 90% of the combat and puzzles are based around them, it would just be dumb

anyway I dunno about "in gaming history" but some of the worst levels/areas in things I've played:

- paper mario ttyd twilight town chapter
- touhou EoSD stage 4
- megaman2 quickman's stage (and other similar stages, megaman has a few more)

Maybe not the worst but Oblivion dungeons. We all know only like a few people designed and then proceeded to copy and paste them with crappy loot sprinkled inside.

Sure, they functioned but it's bad that you just stop exploring them at one point. Same for Skyrim. Places felt too similar and uninspired.

- Any dungeon with Falmar or Ice flinging wizards in Skyrim: They just annoy me, and do an insane amount of damage.

Shrine of Amana in Dark Souls 2

- Area is dark so you need to use a torch to see where you are going
- You are in knee-high water so you can't move fast, and the only quick movement you can do is roll
- When you roll, your torch goes out
- You are on a path with bottomless pits you can only see when you have a torch
- There are enemies that fire homing missiles at you that you can only dodge by rolling, which will put out your torch or knock you off into a pit

whoever thought of this level should be executed
