iirc most of my complaints about the first game centred around controls, and I believe the HD games address that.

Yeah, the controls in R&C1 were pretty bad. R&C for PS4 is probably my third favorite game in the series, which is still like a 9/10 in my book.

Well, every game after the first game has much better controls, which is why it's better to just play the PS4 R&C since it's a remake/reimagining of the original anyway

Into the Nexus (which would come after A Crack in Time) is worth playing, too, I think.

6. Quest for Booty (REALLY short but acts as a good bridge between ToD and CiT)

Haha, well you wont see me dying on the Hill of Bandicoot in their defense, but I do remember at least Crash 1 being alright!

Tbh the Ratchet games aren't super long. Pretty normal length for its kind. Some of them are really short (especially Quest for Booty). So you can probably run through all 7 of those games - 8 if you play the first game - in 2 or 3 weeks easily.

My top 2 are the exact same. Fuck it, this is now a R&C ranking topic because that's what b8 does.

I can't imagine anyone who thinks PS4 R&C is a valid replacement for the original had actually played both...

Give the original a shot. It's dated as hell, but it has the best level design in the series, and it's hard to fully appreciate the characters without it. You can probably skip the first if you aren't enjoying it, though the characters will be a lot less meaningful.

As someone who started with Crack in Time, I say go with the PS3 games first. The controls are better.

When I tried going back to the PS2 games way back when, the worse controls threw me off and I never got used to it. Although I don't think I gave it a real try.

Well yeah, it's a coming of age story. Ratchet's driven by his own personal goals, and comes off as selfish, because he doesn't want any part in this galaxy-saving business Clank wants from him. It makes it all the more special when Clank finally gets through to him and he realizes there are some things bigger than his own plans.

I'm not saying it's some kind of masterpiece of a story, but without the origin, Ratchet just feels like a pretty cool guy. Here's much more of a complete entity with the first game to back him up.

I actually can't really say how the characters are different tbh. I played the first R&C after GC and UYA and got so frustrated at the way it controlled that I quit maybe an hour into it.

Ratchet and Clank spent most of the first game not getting along, with Ratchet being a jerk more than he needs to be. The Qwark stuff in the first game is probably the best part, and that's hard to replicate, especially if you can go into it blind, but yeah.

The reboot is heavily reliant on meme humor, so it's not really a good indicator in that regard. It also stretches out the plot of an 80 minute movie into an 8 hour game, so the story ends up extremely rushed and none of the characters actually interact with each other. Everything up to CiT is written quite well.

I'm of the belief that the PS4 game is not at all a good starting point. It plays better than the first one because it's not an experimental series-beginning PS2 game, but it's a patchwork of reused series elements and sloppy storytelling.
