I mean I've been a football fan my whole life and always ignored the thing but thanks to my aunt asking me about it, for the first time I actually thought about it. And really, what's the point of it?

What does any of it matter?
Every stat, every aspect of what a player can bring to the table is already answered in abundance. Each one of them has played at least 3 years of college football, most 4. Every game is on tape, every play, every interaction, every stat for every player.
How fast is he, how high can he jump, how well can he catch, how quickly can he turn, etc. It's already part of record. And doing it in full gear.
Not to mention it's under real world conditions. In game, under pressure, against different opponents and in different weather conditions. For years.

There's nothing to be gained from the stats in the sterile, controlled and unrealistic environment of the combine. The stats and the combine itself are basically irrelevant.

Interview players.

See how they athletically compare to others in standardized drills.

It's part of the process of evaluating the prospects.

But wouldn't that only matter or hold any meaning at all if you didn't already have years worth of actual performance on record.

Like performing a test to see if a car can perform well at driving 2 miles on a sunny day on a flat road and then basing your purchase on that info.
When you already have years worth of findings showing that car can perform well in any weather, on a flat road, on a wet road, on a gravel road or on a dirt road and driving on any of those roads for 2000 miles. And should be basing your purchase on that info.

Mainly standardized setting for real world professional interviews and interactions. The drills are kinda pointless but you will have speedsters pop up.

It is a hold over from when footage was not easily available and you could see draftees all in one place.

Scouts don't watch the drills to see the college football stars.They go to find people with athleticism that may have been underutilized.
