The mayor of Tennessees largest city, under fire for admitting to a scandalous two-year affair with her bodyguard, is expected to announce her resignation at a press conference Tuesday, local media reported.

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry has begun calling close advisers to inform them of her decision, the Tennessean reported, citing multiple sources. Barry, a Democrat, became mayor in September 2015.

The resignation comes amid an investigation of the extramarital affair with her ex-bodyguard, Metro police Sgt. Robert Forrest

The Nashville paper reports that Barrys departure will elevate Vice Mayor David Briley to the job of acting mayor.

Barry, 54, admitted to the affair Jan. 31. At the time she vowed to remain in office.

On Tuesday, she would be the first Nashville mayor to leave office before the expiration of their term in nearly a century.

Forrest resigned from the Metro Nashville Police Department after Barrys admission. He headed her security detail at City Hall.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into whether Barry misused public funds to carry on the affair.

A special committee of Nashville city council members is also probing Barry and Forrest's travel and overtime expenses.

In addition, a group of local activists has filed an ethics complaint against Barry. They claim that her relationship with Forrest compromised her in making decisions related to law enforcement.
