Someone on my Instagram keeps reposting stories from people bitching that RuPaul is transphobic and doesn't have the right to speak on matters because he's a cis male?

The hell is going on?

Ru Paul uses trans slurs all the time and other demeaning phrases targeting trans women in particular. And it's because of trans women like Marsha p. Johnson that we even had the gay rights movement. And how have many trans women started out? With drag.

So yeah, him being cis and trying to be the authority on drag is pretty garbage. But par for the course.

Wait, Rupaul is considered cisgender? Huh. I'm so lost on these terms. I thought he was gay tbh. He just dresses in drag as a hobby?

Cis just means in your normal days you dress as the gender you were born with.

So you can be gay and cis. RuPaul does drag for money and doesnt walk around day to day in drag.

As for him being transphobic, hes not. Making a pun on shemail 5 seasons ago when the contestants get mail does not make RuPaul transphobic

He says it regularly and has defended his use of it, and he's also been saying some classic transphobic nonsense. And then the kicker is yesterday he tweeted a train flag. Not a trans pride flag. But a train flag that's two shades of green and one that's yellow. Meaning he googled train flag and copied the first image he found without reading. A continued pattern of such behavior on top of sloppiness like that doesn't bode well for him.

Also, aren't these quotes from a while back. I know he's been making efforts to be more inclusive of trans and gender non-conforming people in the past couple years. Several of the queens from previous seasons have since come out as trans themselves and they still work with him.

You might could project transphobia to his stance on gender, because his personal philosophy is that gender doesn't exist and that all personal expression is drag. In that context, labels of masculinity or femininity or kind of crutches to outgrow. I can see how someone who is trans might look at that and see a kind of erasure, or see how the popularity of those ideas might undermine the efforts of transactivists seeking legal protection for TGNC people. They will likely have some good points. But it's not so cut and dry.

There's a lot of nuance to this stuff. Always has been. And you don't have to navigate the tightrope of being a racial/sexual minority to get that. Empathy and trust usually does the trick. Having that experience can help though.

RuPaul isn't a horrible person though.

He's certainly not perfect, though. He has been taking to task for engaging in some racially insensitive gags and hiding behind his own blackness as an excuse, and occasional faux pas. And he doesn't always immediately acknowledge when he's done wrong. He's certainly not actively malicious though.

Because he's always had shitty views and when called on them he's doubled down or said to not get so mad

Racially insensitive gags? So racial satire is off limits?

It's not off-limits but when you're built up as 'queen mother' of the whole self-acceptance politic, and you use your platform to take shots as the disenfranchised for money/laughs it hurts.

It's similarly complicated. Yes, camp has always been part of the drag repertoire. For decades it was a comedic or theatrical shield popular in media with frequent gay subtext, like theater. Yes, camp often engages in some pretty crass humor around sexuality, race, and class. But it's usually self-deprecating humor directed at an exaggerated drag persona who is clearly not sincere and we avoid cliches. Having PoC drag queens dress up like mammies and pantomime messily eating fried foods in prison is a bit much. Later seasons of RPDR have smoothed those edges, but we've still not really acknowledged the misstep.

And there's the way she seems to 'black it up,' at points in her perfomance. This is related to her 'the rest is drag' philosophy. Like gender, race too can be a mask for him/her to play up or down as the situation demands. It's internally consistent for her, but you can imagine how some people react to that who might accuse her as mischaracterizing the nature of race as something we can control instead of something simultaneously 'done by us' in how we present ourselves, and 'done to us' in what onlookers project on to us.

TLDR: She's not Dave Chapelle, but she certainly isn't Oprah either.

And I retract my original statement of "horrible people being horrible". I will adjust it to "people being horrible". No matter what you do or who you are in life, you are owed a call-out if you do something horrible.
