I never bought a smartphone before or owned one or used one so I don't know.

It's fine.

It basically had everything you could ask for in a smartphone other than a removable battery at the time of release (which does mean that after about 2 years you have to replace the phone because the battery will be pretty bad by then). That said, more high end phones these days seem to be going with a non removable battery than with a removable battery.

The fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone is in an awkward position, much higher than it should be, which they sort of fixed in the S9 which is coming out in a few weeks.

The curved edge screen is not an improvement over a flat screen in my opinion but it's not a deal breaker.

Getting a case is practically mandatory because the phone is really slippery.

Of course, I think the only phones in competition with Samsung for higher pricing are Apple made ones. Although since the S9 is coming out soon I expect the S8's price will drop.

I have a s7 edge and still love it. Fast. Battery still holds a good charge after almost 2 years. Great screen. Pretty close to the s8 but a few hundred bucks cheaper.

That reminds me, not much longer until the S9 releases.
I currently have an S6 and it's definitely showing its age in some ways.
But then again, the S6 is supposedly worse than the S5 and S7 lol.

I don't know what kind of new features the latest models offer, but I still use a Galaxy S5 and it does everything I need it to (and has a removable battery). I was going to get an S6, but it doesn't even have an SD card slot and I couldn't have that.

So far I've only had the S5 and S7. The S5 lasted a good while but definitely started showing its age by the time the S7 came out. I'm using the S7 since it came out and it's still doing great. It's not as speedy or long-lasting as when it first released of course, but it's still solid. I can imagine the S8 is a good choice as well, but if you're looking for cheaper, you can't go wrong with the S7.
