Chicago-area officials trying to prevent funerals for gang members from turning into shootouts say the issue has gotten so far out of control that one cemetery has started hiring off-duty police officers.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart met Thursday with political, religious and funeral industry leaders to discuss the problem following a funeral procession in December that was marred by gunfire.

"It's getting out of control, it really is, Hillside Police Chief Joseph Lukaszek told FOX 32. The gangs just think that it's a safe haven for them and they do whatever they want to do.

Dart who hopes to come up with proposals ready to be put into action by May says the shootings have been escalating over the last ten to 15 years from where it was not much of a problem to now it occurs more frequently.

He told FOX 32 that at least one cemetery has been hiring off-duty cops whenever a gang member is set to be buried.

John McCall, a local funeral director, said he's increasingly worried about the safety of his employees.

"It is dramatic for the families and very dramatic even for the funeral directors, the violence that's going on and all the things that's happening. Guns and knives, he said.

Article would be stronger is there were quantitative metrics on this, but it's pretty fucked up that funerals are now a battle ground.

There are nice places in Chicago, and places you just shouldn't go. Unfortunately over the last several years the latter has increasingly bled into the former. One of the reasons I left.

I wouldn't doubt it at all. Seriously couldn't pay me to visit that shithole. It is unfortunate that the national guard can't just roll in.

for many years prior to that, Chicago was seen as 'the great american city' due to their recovery from the crime wave of the 90s, though the recession in 08 was bad for most cities and chicago arguably never recovered from that

I lived there most of my life and can say its always been very segregated. Crime is underreported there and judges often let lesser offenses slide or give lenient penalties for serious felonies. But I agree, the last 2-3 years see criminals emboldened and doing things in upscale neighborhoods that were relatively quiet before. Its a concern amongst people that live there. I used to live in Roscoe Village myself.

I don't think these articles/stories make it apparent....but almost all of this constant violence takes place in one small corner of the city where nobody really goes and nobody really wants to go.
