Yes, consumers are dumb for liking a system that offered a cheap DVD option and had one of the strongest libraries in videogame history to that date. Good hot take.

It's hard to compete with a console that launches with a 700 game library.

Actual reason: They made some terrible business decisions with the Sega Saturn that hurt consumer confidence in the Dreamcast era. However, the nail in the coffin was a proposed Sega/Sammy merger in which Sega backed out at the last minute which was seen as a huge insult in Japanese culture. In retaliation, Sammy bought out Sega via hostile takeover, broke up their development studios, put most of their talent on making pachinko machines, and fired all the top Sega execs. The company has been a shell of its former self ever since.

do you really believe that the ps2 had the strongest library in video game in history in the year 2000?

and it is very unfortunate imo that the ps2 killed the dreamcast because it could play dvds, given that most ppl on this board like their systems for gaming moreso than multimedia. everyone whined when the xbox one went all in on that stuff

Sony also just blatantly made shit up during that time period. Between the 1998 release of the Dreamcast and the 2000 PS2 release date, Sony announced that the PS2 would have the following during the 1999 E3 conference:
-built in hard drive
-built in cable modem
-50x more power than the Dreamcast
-more RAM than the dreamcast.

And then in the following year they just quietly scaled back promises until the actual release date.

tl;dr: Sony helped tank the Dreamcast by making hollow promises convincing people to wait for the PS2.

A) I didn't say that it had the strongest, I said it was one of the strongest.
B) For a release console, the PS2 had a staggeringly huge number of games on the horizon that made it readily obvious that they were going to offer a huge game library, so it wasn't hard to prognosticate that it was going to hit the ground running a lot better than the Dreamcast did.
C) As the other poster mentioned, the backwards compatibility part didn't hurt.
D) And actually, the DVD capability, if anything, was relatively underutilized. Late generation polls showed that actually a significant proportion of the console's ownership only used it to play games and not DVDs.
E) And even if that wasn't the case, what's so wrong about multipurpose consoles?

It's really a shame. Us gamers really are the ones that lost out when Sega decided to strictly go third party.

The Dreamcast was a fantastic system. Honestly, some of the best release games I've ever seen a console start with. They would've fixed the controller for the second generation (or maybe even later like Sony did for the PS1). The VMU was innovative. Everything about the system was an innovation.

We lost out on some great games. We lost out on Dreamcast 2, Dreamcast 3, Dreamcast 4. We lost out on fantastic gaming.

I actually thought Sega died due to piracy. I vividly remember Bleemcast being sold in Electronic's Boutique (what later became EB Games and now GameStop iirc). A small game library and being too soon for their time (internet gaming on dial-up [unless you had high speed and the converter at the time]) were likely other contributing factors.

That was a small part of it, but not nearly as big as the corporate takeover. The dreamcast is probably the easiest console on the planet to pirate for. It has NO protections, to the point where you can burn games directly to CD and play it on the console without modifications. (I'm being vague here for TOS reasons)

They published Guilty Gear, but most of their money came from making gambling cabinets for Japanese bars and casinos.

it's the opposite. piracy caused a surge of dreamcast sales near the end of life and let them continue on longer than they otherwise would have.

people weren't buying DC games with or without piracy. despite the fact that many of them were very well reviewed.

additionally, bleemcast was a PS1 emulator that ran on Dreamcast, not a dreamcast emulator.

They still make/publish some good games at least (e.g. Yakuza and SMT/Persona), but obviously their output was much greater when they made consoles.

That's why the whole "Nintendo should go third-party" thing is laughable to me. Their incentive and ability to make games would almost certainly be diminished just like Sega's was.

it's a combination of factors, obviously, but the backwards compatibility mattered to a lot of people I think

tho imo the biggest factor was sega's shitty track record with consoles at thaty point

Because people / kids who exclusively owned an N64 or Saturn and were disappointed saw the PS2 as an opportunity to both switch to a competitor and play a large backlog of exclusive / cheap games. Not everyone who bought a PS2 owned a PS1.
