...is that to get a true 'live' number for an index performance, I'm better off searching for the ETF that tracks it than the index itself.

Consider: in the last 15 minutes, the Russell 2000 fell by around a quarter percent.

Looking up RUT, which tracks the index, you'd never know. It last updated at 12:13!

Looking up IWM, which is an ETF that trades at the index's value, you see the decline.

Obviously you can get a real live update within a trading platform...but those tend to kick you out if you idle.

I should not be more reliant on derivative products than existing indexes that were designed to be informative.

I used to keep Optionshouse's platform open all day and i don't think they ever kicked me out, though I believe they were bought so I don't know what the current iteration looks like. Same thing with thinkorswim

mostly, i don't

i just think it's absurd that this information is hidden from retail investors for no reason. a functional workaround exists, and it's not hidden from sophisticated traders, but there's a very overt and seemingly intentional idiot tax built in that seems like it's designed to rip off people who don't know what they're doing.

I don't see it as being hidden its just time delayed. You're not technically trading the index price that is delayed anyway you would have to trade an ETF linked to its performance.

It's live on TD Ameritrade since the live feeds are for those who pay for them and the free rates are delayed. So if you go through your brokerage account they likely pay for the live feed and you can get it there. If you Google it then you'll get the free delayed quote.

my complaint is the free live quote is available if you instead google the derivative that tracks the ETF. if it's that easy to quote the ETF it's just as easy to quote the index.

it's a minor but illogical inconsistency unless you ascribe to the belief that the purpose of anything like this is to milk retail investors for $$$

Dude you're having a melty over something very petty.

Index providers don't have to provide their values live unless people pay for it. They aren't tradable they just track a basket of stocks. The ETFs that track it do because they are actively traded. I mean if you're looking to trade an index then look at the ETFs that track it since that's what you're going to trade anyway.

I mean if you're trading it then your brokerage likely has the live feed of all indices already so look it up through them.

Isn't the delay primarily there to sell you a service? I know most trading platforms charge a premium for realtime updates.
