The best punk rock, to me, is the old stuff. Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols, etc.

That said, there's some interesting punk stuff happening lately. For high-tempo classic punk style, check out White Reaper's "White Reaper Does it Again". For stuff on the punk periphery but isn't necessarily classic punk style (think post-punk, garage, noise, etc) check out Ought's "Sun Coming Down", Parquet Court's "Sunbathing Animal" and "Human Performance", and Cloud Nothings' "Here and Nowhere Else".

Happy listening!

I'm a big fan of Rise Against. Their older albums are close to classic punk if that's the sound your looking for.

Also The Story So Far and Silverstein are worth checking out.

I mean, core essentials for me are Bad Religion, NOFX, Face to Face, Rancid, and Operation Ivy (more ska-punk)

Any of these are a good starting point and worth listening to as far as i'm concerned. Rancid might have the best bassist in any band, ever. NOFX has some brilliant guitar and ultra-fast drumming. Bad Religion has some of the most powerful lyrics as the lead singer is a professor at Cornell.

It really depends on what you are looking out of the music.

Come to think of it, try looking up the soundtracks for the first few Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games. Those were made up of 100% licenses and it was mostly 90's skate punk from various bands that weren't nearly as huge as like, Green Day.

Or just play the games, because the first three were fucking rad. They were all rad up through the seventh one, actually, but I burned out after 3.

Here's my favorite song that I discovered on THPS3:

Green Day - Dookie and blink-182 - Dude Ranch are very similar in sound, and came out within a year of each other. Blink's surge in popularity came right when they had released their poppiest album, Enema of the State, and their biggest song ever, All the Small Things, was as saccharine as they come.

Early Blink definitely did have that no-fucks-given fun punk rock feel, though:

It's kind of hard to peg what Blink really became after their pop-punk stuff, they went emo for a while when that was popular, and now they're more alt-rock, now that the emo guy left. Also, the lead singer for Alkaline Trio's in blink-182 now, he sings on the California album.

The more emo member, Tom Delonge, released his own demo album a few years ago with, ironically, a punk rock song about California and piss.
