In this day and age would people really go insane and lose all their will if we saw something Cthulhu? I feel like people have become desensitized due to media and various movies and games.

I'm sure seeing Cthulhu would be scary but I have a hard time believing you'd just lose all traces of sanity.

Lovecraft creatures are so alien the human mind cannot comprehend them and starts to shut down in self defense. Cthulhu and the like have become mainstream enough to dilute their original meaning, but in true Lovecraftian mythos they just break the human psyche by existing. Even people specifically trained to deal with them experience extreme mental damage from even low tier Outsiders. The only hope to survive an encounter with a high Old One is to be insane before you even start

I think its more like the Great Old Ones can affect the minds of lesser beings. This explains why Cthulhu could communicate telepathically with his slaves. Also, the appearances of the Great Old Ones don't sound so terrifying. A creature that is part squid part dragon, and part human doesn't sound so bad.

The reason it's "part" all of those things is because its physical form is so bizarrely alien that we have no frame of reference, so your mind just immediately cycles through shit trying to find a real comparison.

For reference, R'lyeh itself is so alien that it's hard to look at. The geometry doesn't match anything we're used to.
The city is a panorama of "vast angles and stone surfaces [...] too great to belong to anything right and proper for this earth, and impious with horrible images and disturbing hieroglyphs." The geometry of R'lyeh is "abnormal, non-Euclidean, and loathsomely redolent of spheres and dimensions apart from ours." The strange architecture of the city makes navigation on foot disorienting and treacherous; surfaces that appear flat may actually be tilted, and angles of masonry that appear convex at first glance may actually be concave.

Arguably Cthulhu's most notable trait is the fact that he, alongside the rest of his kin, cannot be comprehended by humans; when a human so much as looks at Cthulhu, they will almost certainly be driven mad by his visage. Cthulhu was also able to create a city out of nowhere.

Dude seeing monsters in fiction is extremely different from monsters in reality. If I saw monsters IRL I'd lose my fucking shit. Especially in a context where (as I understand it) we'd be nothing but cattle to these, revealing a much darker reality than the neutral one we're used to.

Even just the city where they live is impossible to comprehend. It's like something from a different universe. The physics is just impossible but there it is.

It would be marvelous to behold.

The door to Cthulu's resting place is so weird that the sailors can't even decide if it's standing straight up or if it's slanted like a cellar door.

It's a little like a fucked-up version of Plato's Allegory of the Cave.

These descriptions and drawings of Old Ones are less than the shadows on the wall. They're a secondhand story from a guy who knew a guy who saw a picture of the shadows.

The real thing is far beyond it like the sun is far beyond a hydrogen atom.
