16 y/o Josh Gallager, a junior who survived the Parkland High School Massacre is accusing his Math Teacher, Jim Gard of LOCKING him and a dozen kids out of the highway when the gunman opened fire and said he is a COWARD!!

He posted the scathing message on social media accusing him of being a coward but Jim is defending himself stating he was simply following the rules and that he didn't see any students in the hall despite Josh stating they were BANGING ON THE DOOR!!

Josh wrote "I'm a victim of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Shooting. Before the shooting took place i was located in the 700 building which is right next to the freshman building facing it in my Math class with my Teacher, Jim Gard. It was around the time of 2:20 when we had a fire alarm go off, everyone in my class was confused because we had just had one previously in the day. As the class evacuated, gunshots were heard. At this point we all ducked and shock kicked in for half a second of what is happening. As we made it to the door, we found out the door was locked. Which then left me and 15 other students in the hallways ducking as the screams of classmates and gunshots took over the noise around me. I called my dad up on the phone thinking this could be the last time i speak to him. As i was on the phone with him, he tried to calmme down, a teacher i never seen before opened the door for me and 14 other classmates to flee danger. Whe i got into the classroom, i told my dad i loved him, he then said it back to me and he hung up because he was a first responder running into the freshman building. My teacher actually ran back into the classroom without turning around and locked his door. he left 75% of his students out in the hallway to be slaughtered. How can a much such as him be viewed as a hero in the media?. He actually called a news station to inform them what was going on instead of attempting or even thinking to save kids he left in the hall. He is an opportunist and nothing but a coward"

But Gard said he did what was mandated by the rules during a fire drill and said no one was there and that they had to close the door and that was protocol. He told the kids he couldn't let anyone in. Jim said on Sunday that Josh and his Dad came SCREAMING at him when all the students and teachers got back together.

Josh said he wasn't going to "sensationalize" this but wanted to change to happen to protocol because no child can feel safe in this situation. Connor Dietrich, another student also corroborated this and said Mr Gard left students out in the hall and did nothing..

I guess sometimes its better to break protocol.

Im sure fear can be a determining factor of straying from the rules to save some extra lives.

That's a pretty tough question. The policy is presumably there to keep the kids already in the room safe and, in that situation, there's really no way of properly evaluating the threat to ensure that you can safely open the door at any point. In a worst-case scenario, he could have opened the door only for the shooter to kill the kids coming in which would then prevent the door from being closed meaning that the entire classroom is killed as well.

Hard to tell if the person knocking on the door is a threat or not. It was a TRAGIC and TERRIFYING situation for both students and teachers :( :( :(

The teacher should protect the kids already inside the class room because it's better to trust the known rather than the unknown.
