Yeah, they love Arch for some reason, but I dont eat enough glue to genuinely be into it. More power to everyone else!

Arch isn't really a "4chan" distro. Nor is Gentoo - they have legitimate use cases that aren't memes.

I thought you were talking about something like Clover OS which is literally a distro made by a community of /g/ users. Even that one doesn't look particularly bad. Just a specialized set of default software for ricing and bullshit like that.

Gentoo is like "have you ever hated Debian but also hated yourself? Do we have the OS for you!!"

I installed Arch on one of my laptops because I figured it would probably help me get better at using Linux.

I wasn't joking, by the way.

I'm having a problem setting up my locale. I uncommented en_CA.UTF-8 and did locale-gen, but my locale.conf file isn't showing up in /etc/

I'm going to troubleshoot it tomorrow (its late tonight) but I figured I might as well throw this out there and maybe get some experienced replies. I fully expect to do some googling tomorrow, though.

Do you already know Linux? Because it isn't like there's a ton of stuff to learn in Arch that you couldn't learn in a simpler distro like Ubuntu or openSUSE.

Using Arch makes you particularly good at...using Arch.

I'm reasonably good with Linux. I figure that if I want to get a better understanding of Linux, it's better to go with a distro that forces you to have a more solid understanding.

I mean sure, it requires more of a solid base of knowledge so you're not just floundering from the start.

Iunno - I guess it depends on what one considers difficult or complex. The installation process is more involved, but it's really just a test for reading comprehension. It isn't like the installer throws any curveballs. I've heard a lot of people claim pacman is a difficult package manager because of its tendency to break things, but I've also heard a lot of people claim that shouldn't happen unless you don't do a thorough enough check on things before attempting to upgrade.

I'm not saying don't use Arch or anything like that. Mostly just rambling about what I saw on /g/ when I was first getting into Linux - a lot of people claiming Arch is an expert-level distro, and a lot of people claiming it really isn't one.
