First thing that comes to mind that really stands out is that there is some basic combat in Stardew Valley, and I don't remember there being combat in any of the Harvest Moon games.

Rune Factory had combat I think, which is technically part of the HM series.

Yeah he's right. Some of the boxes even have Harvest Moon on the cover

It's pretty much a more modern harvest moon with more mechanics and stuff.

The only downside is the god awful villagers.

Better farming mechanics for the most part but the villagers are all almost void of any character and you can only talk to most of them twice a day. The stories behind the characters are sometimes interesting, but the daily convos are all almost garbage. The game doesn't scratch the same itch as a great Harvest Moon game imo.

That being said, it's a wonderful game and the mining is fun. Stamina management is a pain in the ass for the most part though.

i haven't played harvest moon since uh.. the ds ones, but they have crafting. everyone loves crafting.

If you like HM then you'll probably like Stardew Valley, it's a great game, though in a couple of places (both mechanics and villagers) Stardew Valley feels like a downgrade but it also adds some other things like combat and arcade that you don't find in Haverst Moon/Story of Seasons.
