It's some kind of trend/meme on the Internet right now to constantly make suicide jokes, jokes about hanging yourself and drinking bleach, etc

Literally a common CE user just got banned for that kind of joke a few days ago so tread carefully

The point is that with this new meme the past couple of years, it's gotten increasingly more difficult to tell when they aren't. Like a boy who cried wolf situation.

generally people who actually want to die won't actually say "i want to die."

there will be other warning signs, that seem more harmless

"i'm really tired of living"
"i'm so tired of everything"
"do you ever wish you could sleep forever"
"when will i stop suffering"
"sometimes i really wish i could just stop"

if they cut off contact from others over time
if they seem to be sleeping more often than usual
if you notice new habits like smoking or drugs
if they start giving their stuff away (this is a dead giveaway)

That's fair. I don't disagree. Though, I do think that actual depressed/suicidal people feel kind of emboldened lately because of said meme. Because of that, it makes it hard to discern.

i mean, if they're someone openly struggling with depression and anxiety, it is always worth checking up on them.

don't ignore warning signs, it may be too late when you decide to act
and nobody wants to go through that, trust me

there's nothing like someone dying and you realizing you never got the chance to say anything nice.

Unless you actually know the person, you're not likely to know whether or not they're serious. And unless you're some kind of social worker or therapist, best not to bother.

That's not to say you should do nothing when it actually turns out that person is suicidal, but if you have no way of knowing, don't bother.
